How many people here have checked out the prices of smoke protection boxes?
prices ive come across range from ?800 upto ?2000
according to the literature they can increase the life expectancy of your projector in a smokey enviroment by six fold.
a cheap generic box???
any of you budding inventors out there fancy having a go ??...

made a weatherproof box out of ply
worked well apart from the excessive need for air inlet holes, of which many are needed
you cannot stop the smoke inlet without a lot of filtration - which just makes air inlet sizes larger, thereby making the box huge and heavy and bulky and naff
its just not worth it in my view considering beamers are getting so cheap - and most good models take on board the rough smokey climates they operate in anyway.
with a good warranty and regular TLC you should be covered for a few years
...but im willing to hear other stories

there's no smoking here either , not in clubs , pub or restaurants . it sure makes a difference , none of your gear stinks after a gig .

Somehow I'm envisioning a long flexible vent pipe - like for a clothes dryer vent, bringing clean air from the outside in to the projector box... If it was a permanent install in a smoky club, I'd definitely do it.

The easiest source of big filters is from cooker hoods- charcoal and grease filters. That would be my starting point for a DIY project.

adding a 12v fan from a pc cpu
with a good filter can be a solucion ?
if you add filter to the proyector you can obstuct the nesesary
cooling air flow, but with a fan that increase the air flow i think
it could be a good idea

Yeah no-smoking laws make your equipment last longer and not smell like a night club.
Now all we need is no smoke machines (go hazers) and UV light (that shit is aweful and so 90's).

im referring more to excessive smoke machine use in clubs more than cigarettes...some clubs just insist on using smoke til your eyes bleed...usually at the beginning of the night when the place is filling up
yes projectors are comming down in price but its still a pity to treat them as expendables
my projectors i use for conference work will carry on till the lamp goes..then its just a matter of replacing the lamp.
My club projectors will last a year until they are destroyed!

To protect your projector from smoke of any sort you need to place the projector into a safe and secure environment, projector enclosures are becoming more and more popular.
A Protector box will also reduce lamp replacements as it helps keep the projector cool and filters all the incoming air.
We use a company out of California http://www.projectorenclosure.com
They make boxes that will protect your projector from heat, dust, chalk, smoke, humidity, etc.
We have installed projectors in factories, schools, bars and nightclubs; these boxes have really come down in price as well.
good luck
