we usually make b/w set, cause we work a lot for gothic/fetish party.
we make set with some old horror film extract (bella lugosi, nosferatu, etc), and most of the fetish material we find is in B/W.
it's create some dark "ambiance" :-))

I usually end up fussing about with some color, but I have a whole set of spirals and gridwork in black and white that I'll luma key under black and white content.
Here's some good black and white content I've used:
-Maya Deren Shorts
-Man Ray short Films
-Killer's Kiss (Kubrick) Fight sequences, and Ballet Dancer Sequence
-The Trial (Welles) where the kids chase him through the light-streaked hallways.
-The Wind
- Any Busby Berkeley Musical
- Joan of Arc, Vampyr (Dreyer)
And with Halloween in the air, The Begotten is going to get played alot.

i'm working on a liveperformance videobacking for a concept audio cd inspiried by a collection of b/w photographs of new york (no 9/11 relation here) the videoresult will be b/w too and projected in a mix with the original photographs.

we use b/w clips, though never done a complete set, its usually when we have structures, such as power line towers, that we want to luma key over other stuff.
Have also used b/w clips of ppl dancing - the old lindyhop style (the Black jazz dancing that led to jitterbug) looks good, and the best stuff is in b/w, although I've not yet found a set in which it works well alongside colour clips.

i started off using only black and white, my first projector was so dim i had to produce everything at high contrast so it would project well, so i worked with a lot of line graphics and wireframe stuff. and funily enough i am working on a black and white of set of abstracted dancers today .

greyscale is one of my most used effects... my visuals are more about live compositing than video sampling, and if you greyscale clips they mesh so much better...
also my residencies will see me mixing for between 4-9 hours, so i like to build up the visuals over the night: start b/w line art, onto hi-contrast greyscale, blips into full colour etc.
and the bottom line: me as an artist, i seem to understand shapes :D much better than colours  ... so duotone rocks my world.

And to complete what visnaut said, our first show at a large d'n'b night was pure black and white because we only had a s-vhs lead that only gavea b/W signal, remember that?

I love grainy lofi BW footage - kind of like the video tape found in Japanese horror 'Ring' or Lynch's 'Eraserhead' or 'Tetsuo - The Ironman'. A lot of visuals actaully improve if you leave something to the viewers imagination. Also like old films, silent films, unnateral movement caused by cinecams and webcams. A lot of visuals rely to heavily on sparkly colours & textures. Black n White really brings out the tiger in you. grrr.

nice phluxm I also have samples of both erasurehead and tetsuo.... in response to seeing a Glitch VJ and hearing LEV drone on about the Rebelle I am atuclly planning a glitch set of my own very soon @ a gig, most glitching how ever will be triggered glitch samples but I'm sure static, black and white material and samples form the 2 movies mentioned above will feature prominetly, also of course Nosferatu is a necessity, although this could possibly be the BARAKA of the Goth/Harcore/Fetish Visuals scene :D
Yeah low rez dirty b&w video ROCKS!!! but just make sure its in the right context.... I mean don't go using it when the promoter wants fractals and shiney 3d :shake:

like the spirit of Black and white, cause its minimal and not so stressy for the eyes of the people.
you can download a zip file with black and white animations on my site http://reachme.at/sensualvibrations
enjoy

Some black and White content - Yes. Only Black and White content - No!
I recall seeing this university production where they produced the backdrop visuals using Black and White Only and at the end I was feeling a bit sick from it. Life is full of colour, you have to have that!

me and Ralph from IUA realy went for it with the black and white footage recently during a set we were doing, worked realy well with the music and looked awesome. it actualy drew the eye more to the shape and pattern that was being created on screen. we didnt do it all night, and when we went back into colour mode it made it seem all the more wonderfull.
i wouldnt do it everytime but it realy did work as part of the night, definately a trick to be kept up the sleeve for further use.

ive got quite a lot of b&w content, mainly vector elements, path shapes in aftereffects, growth patterns etc
what i also do is have a 3 color session in some mixes, so its black white and 1 other color, alternate through reds greens yellows etc.
its quite correct that it draws you in, thats because borders shapes and patterns are more defined and the edges are nice and sharp.(remember those cards with ink blots on, where you visualise something, like a bat, a dog, a smiling face, even though its just an ink blot that represents nothing, its what you see).

I used to pull the colour out of the visuals until the main act came on, gave a bit of a bang when the colour was put back in.

and for the record, I no longer drone on about the Rebelle un-provoked. I typically only speak of it when someone else brings it up.
I do like droning though............

WOW! good question. I am an all black and white "VJ"! I use black and white almost 95% of the time. I actually did it because of this city and im colour blind. When I went to school for telecom I had to check my vectorscopes to match colours. lol Seriously though, I started my Video mixing in this decaying city (aka detroit) and because of its abandonment I would scavenge old CCTV cameras from the vacant buildings. these were primarily Black and White Tube Cameras so I got comfy with that method. I originally started my b/w camera mixing when techno was moving out to take over the world. I ended up sticking with that format. Whats kind of funny is nobody really seems to notice it. I only have had a few people comment on it.

This topic gave me the inspiration for some new concept I might give a shot.
(Do a countdown until color, play black'n'white 'til midnight.)

when Muziq (warp records) played at the night I was doing visuals for we had to play a DVD he'd got with him. It was all B&W morphing patterns and jagged shapes/logos. It really worked with his style of music and it being purely BLACKWHITE added something/created a shift in the atmosphere altho I cant put my finger on qiote what but it was good. Also I was glad of the break from vjing! (as it was about 4am at the time lol)
I'll post a clip up from his DVD as I kept it at the end of the night....whoopsie :D

I use A BUNCH of BW clips, but I've never just used bw for a whole set. I just like using REALLY VIVID colors coming through bw clips.

I had the same problem at a gig in Calgary, Canada back in 2008... the wierd thing was we were using resolume on a PC and a DVD of pre-mixed content running through an Edirol V4 hardware mixer... the resolume feed came through in colour, while the DVD played only in black and white. The projector was also a piece of sh!t with a burned out 1/4 of the image. Horrible horrible circumstances, but we had fun anyway. :violin:
We do mix b&w content exclusively for some tracks/sections of our shows. Sometimes it's high contrast abstracts, sometimes ol' found footage.
