I'm thinking about setting up a darwin streaming server... but I can't work out which software I should install to broadcast video and audio.
Apple do QT broadcaster but its only for mac.
What other options are there?
Thanks,
Ben

i beleive that pc users can view a quicktime stream. any ISO compliant player will do. i'm looking into this as well for wrongsauce, since i'm hating on realnetworks.

real suck... just try and find the free player on their site.
apple do an open source quicktime streaming server that probably now does MPG4 _and you can install it on a Linux box, for free. no contest!

Thanks guys, but I don't need a player, I need a broadcaster/producer.
Something similar to RealProducer, except without the price (or limitations of the free one).

quicktime streaming server = broadcaster
any video programme should export to quicktime, if not the only investment you need is quicktime pro for like $30 which will convert anything to quicktime. or use the pro tools like media cleaner... highly recommended, i would say essential tool for visuals regardless of sorting out streaming stuff.

Cheers Toby, but I've tried quicktime pro, and it doesn't encode live video signals so that they can be sent to the server.
What I'm really looking for is an equivalent of QuickTime Broadcaster (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/broadcaster/) for the PC, either Windows or Linux.
I've just found Sorenson Broadcaster, but its ?170, and Apple give away their broadcaster for free!
Any ideas?

you can do live streaming for a quicktime / darwin server from the PC - the easy way is to use sorrenson broadcaster (which there is now a PC version of) the Free way is to use the multicast tools VIC and RAT see http://home.nyu.edu/~dp51/qt/streaming.html for details - its a little fiddely this way and your limmited to old codecs (i would try and find a copy of broadcaster - it will give higher quality video with far less hassel)

aaah... now i understand, l i v e ...
hmm yup now MPG4 is on the block there really is no alternative, ISO _and it rocks, the stream i viewed was the best quality i've seen and scrubbed as if it was on the hard drive. but it seems there is no PC live encoder... :(

Really? Live encoding to MPEG-4 and broadcasting in one go? Do you remember an url? Can it scale up to fullscreen?

Mac only i'm afraid http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/broadcaster/
the best you can do on a pc is sorenson video 3 with the pc version of sorenson broadcaster

Look for windows media encoder, will do live broadcasts with ease... some simple wizards are included. Can be download for free from microshaft's website. It works well, and as soon as I find a decent price on bandwidth (yea RIGHT!) i'll be broadcasting to a darwin server (which also has a PC version) to replicate all the streams. Main goal is to stream live music and vis from gigs. problem is getting a high speed connection at the gig itelf to upload the original stream. Plus, who wants to sit at home and watch a party when they could be there.... don't see any real REASON for it.... other than coolness, and it would be cool, that's for sure. I dunno. If you are planning on doing something like this, make sure you have a hefty budget. You'll need a pretty fast computer to do the live encoding/broadcasting (1Ghz, 256MB RAM+, and a good video card). Drop me a line if you need any help.
Get windows media encoder here

DOWNLOAD Darwin server for PC's here
http://www.opensource.apple.com/projects/streaming/release/DarwinStreamingSrvr4.1.1-Windows.exe
Darwin server info can be found at this link, be sure to ignore the QT streaming server junk, they're just trying to get you to BUY the QT server before you download the free darwin server ;-)

are micro$oft really that liberal that they'll let their precious software touch something opensource. well if its true then b*gger me sideways!
Streaming doesn't have to happen over the internet. It can happen over a LAN too....
