View Full Version : 32bit TZT - A possibility?

It seems to me that the only flaw to TZT is the 16bit mode it has to run in. I get alot of color banding in alot of my clips. Now I'm no programmer but how much work would it take to make TZT able to run in 32bit mode? I would assume that we're talking about rewriting the entire program or something am I wrong? I would be more than willing to learn what I need to know in order to make this happen. Is it all pretty much C++?
Thanks and much props to all the peeps who have contributed to making TZT what it is today!

It seems to me that 24bit color would be most advantageous as the alpha channel is usually irrelevant (for TZT in it's current state).
But yes, TZT does all internal processing at 320x240 at 16bpp. You can run TZT in 32bpp, but it just upscales the color at the end.
The source code is available from http://sourceforge.net/projects/opentzt/
One of the great things about TZT is that it's fast. The main reason that it's fast (aside from some assembly wizardry) is that it's only processing 320x240@16bpp. We are working on increasing things like resolution and color depth, but that requires much more processing power and/or optimized code. My long term plan is to learn assembly and incorporate SSE2 instructions as they will provide the most speed benefit.
If you'd like to work on programming TZT that would be great. You can sign up to be on the TZT developer email list here: http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=115702

to the OpenTZT code... but AFAIK, they've all been filed as tests... I was curious if/when all the coders were going to (virtually) get together and do a full release with the latest updates (MIDI, hirez, etc)
and also if there's some <ahem> sane/rational MIDI chart... thanks to erm was it TDeagan? for the original one, but honestly, its nearly Greek to me, and while no pro w/ it, I can generally operate/understand most MIDIspeak
curious as ever to see what'll get added next...
BTW, did anyone ever figure out how to get rid of the underscan when using a capture device? or is it just my crappy dazzle80?

One of the things I'd really like to see in TZT (or Resolume for that matter) is for flash clips to be able to respond to mouse movements. Just the same way you can link parameters to mouse_x or mouse_y axis in Arkaos.
This Site (Liquid Journey) (http://www.liquidjourney.com/) has tons of open source dynamic flash clips that would look soooooo nice in TZT if they could still respond to mouse movements.
Esotic, I'll jump on the developers list as soon as I get a good grasp of C++.

hi there,
in resolume you can send the mouse x and y messages to a flash movie.
resolume has a set of four variables that range from 1..100 that are send to any flahs movie wich you are playing. those parameters can be set by using the sliders or settings the params to respond to the mouse x or y.
just check out our forum for more info

Sounds like TZT is losing some ground in the feature war. :)
Hmmm... An actual release (like 2.0) for TZT? I'm not sure how much longer that will take, cuz there need to be considerable improvements and they all need to be ironed out. I really do try to not break anything when making test releases, and the latest 1.2.83 should be failry solid (except for crashing on about 5 different freeframe effectors which are easy enough to track down and not use at showtime).
I would still like to try and lube up the texture translations between TZTinternal and FreeFrame (as it's currently a bit slow).
But alas, most of my time right now is being dumped into my January 29th show.
Not sure what to tell you about the MIDI chart as the TZT list-serve community has been fairly damned quiet except for me and my vocal self.
I'll see if I can't figure out something about that flash/mouse business.
I've never noticed underscan from any of my capture devices.
