I've been using MAX for the last 18 months and got a good little interface going for synching Quicktime to external audio source, changing frame rates in real time etc:
Was thinking of having a go with PD as it is
a) Free
b) works with OSX?

Anyone got any experiences of both MAX and PD

ps. wkd site... sooo much info...

i work(ed) quite alot with pd, and i'm momentarly working on this -> http://www.vjforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=954

i've seen max/nato only couple times in action so cant say much to that, only that they are pricey :)

...

ZEXY is a MUST external if you use PD
(here's a search for externals: http://iem.kug.ac.at/pdb/)

GEM [openGL] (http://iem.kug.ac.at/GEM/) and Framestein [directX] (http://www.framestein.org) are the only video externals for pd that i'm aware of...

for better GUI (or visuals too) you can now use Flash with this external : http://www.akustische-kunst.org/puredata/flash/flash.html

cheers

there is also jmax which works under java and is more compatible with max (only a pro if your used to that) and is developed mostly by a small team.. but I think pd is growing much faster judging from the traffic at both the jmax and the pd mailing lists

Will Max4/MSP2 support OS X?
Yes. We are working on OS X versions of Max4/MSP2, Pluggo, and Jitter. We will also develop radiaL OSX after its initial OS9 release. A public beta version of Max/MSP for OS X will be available in November. We plan to release the upgrades by the end of 2002.

Will there be a charge for the upgrade?
There will be no charge to owners of Max4/MSP2 and Jitter 1.

Are there any plans to port Max/MSP to Windows?
Cycling '74 is porting Max/MSP to Windows. For more information, check our Windows frequently asked questions page.

just starting so please forgive any ignorance on my part....I read this

Is it possible in max/msp , jitter ( or for that matter anything :D ) to sync frame rates directly from a variable midi clock input as opposed to audio input.I am demo'ing some vj packages at the moment and this is the feature most important for my work ...

You can do all that in MAX.
I'm using a Red Federation BeatExtractor to get the DJ's bpm. This sends out MIDI clock which I reconvert back to a bpm in MAX using the counter object (MIDI clock=96 ticks a bar). It's a bit long-winded I know but it works! Use the Tempo and Select objects to change framerates and trigger frames in sequences or at random...
I've not used Jitter yet but you can do it with MAX.

Hope this helps some.

thanks stimuleye ....i will give that a try.....seems a bit longwinded to me but if its stable it might be the clincher...i would have thought a video sequencer complete with real time effects ( vst for video !!)and which operated like an audio sequencer would be the first one that someone would build but maybe i have missed something here. Anyway nice 1
