following the "decent mixer" thread
http://www.vjforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=964
i was wondering 'bout the different technical realisations of luma/chroma keying on the different vmixers.

most important right now:
are they any mixers who can regulate
the amount of applied keying by knob /slider or are they all just switching keying modes and r amount controlled by the general mix of the A/B sources like the my hama dvm-1000? tnx in @vance.

and second.
as much as i like reading those lively debates bout ppl defending their toys
til the death, how about a visual sign of proof? i think these moving fractals
from electric sheep http://draves.org/electricsheep/archive are great candy-dates for lumakey challenges....

Hmmmm for versatility of selection colour the videonics unit get the nod from me, but can be fiddly to set it up.

For great live control the luma modded MX10 and 12 get my nod with seperate sliders doing both hi and low cut off and an reverse button its easily better than the MX50 and other panasonic units.

UUUGGGGHHHHH NOOOOOOOO not FRACTALS!!!!

ohmygawd, morph, that's for testing purposes only, btw they don't look like fractals either.... but they are full of detail so u can effectivly check how good your keying really is....why don't you just check them first b4 crying out loud?

btw: u remember the guy talking bout
swirly winamp shit and cheesy 3d efx?
the same now looking 4 winamp avi output and easy to handle 3d apps?
only a matter of time he will be asking for fractals i bet.... ;)

Hahaha, thats for a "certain" type of winamp plugin (non-swirly) and different "non-plastic pillman shit" type 3d.

Sorry about jumping to conclusions but fractals have really done a lot of damage in the past and I'm sure some could be good and redeem the genre but most are horrid

"the amont of applied keying" ????? - if i understand what you mean by this, then Yes this is how the panasonic mixers work - you set the cutoff for the key by twisting a knob (or using the up down arrows on an mx20) and then you fade the key in and out with the crossfader

we use an mx50 and a DVM1000 and the dvm although less configurable wins hands down when it comes to ease of use in a live situation

MX20 - keys into the dark areas of the picture, uses up/down buttons to control the bottom end of the key, no control of the top end. (if that makes any sense)

yeah, the MX1 lets you adjust the thresholds for the keying also (Shift+arrow buttons)

So does the mod utilize the "superimpose effect" controls for the high and low end of the luma effect? Does this mean that with a modded MX12 you can display 3 full color images at the same time (not just a single color)? I do use the superimpose effect to get that 3rd layer going, but the single color deal sorta sux.

About fractals... I feel ya on this one MoRpH, but it seems like there is a market for them (though I will not take part in it). I did a show last week and another guy was doing some 3D visualizer stuff and 3D from DVD. I thought the quality of stuff he was doing was very good (better than mine), but it felt soulless. These type of VJs have their place, but I really don't just like watching them unless I am decently drunk. I think it has something to do with the amount of effort it takes to throw up a visualizer app (minimal) and cross mix with a commercial DVD (less than minimal), which I guess sort of erks me. I like visuals where I can tell some effort and thought went into them.

i know what you mean about fractals and swirly shit but i feel that the context is just as important,
if its a hippy psytrance crowd then thats what the audience like and so your job is to produce fractals etc that are high quality.
if its an arty breakbeat crowd then playing fractals etc. is like stripping at a wedding.
