View Full Version : Resolume problem

This is my first post, i discovered this forum today.
I'm a newbie to VJ and i'm still discovering new VJ software. The best that i found is Resolume. But i have a problem with it. When i send the video to a second monitor it's just painfully slow. When i play a video with 640x480 maximized in the second monitor (set to 800x600, for example, the frame rate is about 10fps!. And this reflects also when i'm working with Resolume: it becomes very slow.
I have a Toshiba laptop, P4 1.8GHZ, 512MB RAM and a GeForce 4 Go. I don't think the problem is from the laptop. So i'm asking, do i have to use a special codec? Any recommended video resolution? Any special care using videos in a second monitor? Of course i can have a 320x240 but then it would become very ugly (those ugly pixels...) in 640x480...
Thanks

The best codec for vj'ing that i have found is cinepack or midivid. Most of my clips are in 320x240 but i have some in 640x480 too that don't ever give me any problems and i'm running on a 1.3 ghz p4 with 256 ram. My guess your problem is your codec. Also there are a lot of great tips in the resolume manual that you should have. If you read the manual you should find out everything you need to know.
Later I'm out!

First get the latest beta of resolume as it has been tweeked to speed up performance on the second desktop. Also yeah cut the rez of your clips to something like 400x300 (if 320x240 is to small)
I'm not going to go into it here but I don't think the dual head implementation in Resolume is all that good, I don't understand why someone can't give us a small preview on the main (LCD) AND a full (640x480 desktop) screen output on the second head... is that sooooo hard???
BTW pixels are NOT UGLY... they are your friend and ask nothing in return, how could you be so mean. CHUNKY IS FUNKY!

If you can, I think it's better to use the Full Screen mode rather than Maximize, the former has been optimized in Resolume 1.1 (it however doesn't work on my laptop...?). 640x480 is a somehow large resolution for clip mixing, remember that this mode use 4x (not 2x) more space than 320x240. If you use 3 layers and special effects it's not surprising it gets difficult for Resolume.

Also you should make a decision first about your final output before rendering your videos.
Resolume like most other VJ software, compromises resolution for playback speed. ie your videos probably are on 320x240 and played back at half normal resolution to 640x 480.
However, these videos only look good at HALF resolution. ie if your are playing a 320x240 vid and your output is 800x600, its gonna look shit. if you are playing 400x300 vids on a 640x480 output, its gonna look shit.
so the golden rule is
320x240 vids -> 640x480 output
400x300 vids -> 800x600 output
having said that, my laptop is about the same profile as yours and I prefer 640x480 output... Resolume is too slow also, I think its maybe a cache hogging issue...
