View Full Version : Clapping in Time to My Beat

Just had an interesting experience - was playing a gig tonight, and the tune brokedown to a fast 4-beat. I Tried using our avi clips to recreate the beat in our visuals, with Midivids feedback effect, and found it was too fast to be noticable. I dropped to hitting the half beat, to get more effect, and almost immediately the crowd started clapping - in time to my visuals :) :) .
Has anyone else found something that has noticeably affected the crowd in some way?

i think, its the music which gets the crowd clap and cry ...
they just think that you are the dj :p
... i experienced something like that really often ... and people came and asked me if i could play something more housier...
everytime they came i?d like to say: eat shit and die or something else .... ;)
Think about doin Visuals without music ... nobody would clap ...

I`ve had reactions like this using footage thats picks up on the instruments in the track. I`ve got some nice bongo clips that when synchronised with drumming in the music gets a good reaction, i think its just because the crowd momentarily realises your there and what you do/are capable of with regard to matching image to sound. I can cut and fade in time to beats and rythms all night but most people dont notice until there is an explicit link (on a very basic level) between the two.

the only time i got such a crowd response to vjing was my first ever vj performance in '93 in berlin. someone had fed me a microdot and the whole crowd were on them ... the promoter put me behind the mx50 and 2 decks and cam ( didnt know this before hand) when moving the cam across the crowd i encountered the screen i was projecting onto and discovered video feedback. I went woooo tripping as i was.. funny thing was so did the crowd ... never have had such a response from the crowd since for anything visual.

I've ahd the pleasure of something similar happening. A short clip we created of janet leigh screaming in the shower from the film Psycho (that was a lie if the copyright owners of the film 'Psycho are reading), with the word 'Scream' blazed across the scream, got certain elements of the crowd screaming, mostly girls i think. But very gratifying anyway. (if not a bit cheesy).

I had a crazy crowd response a couple of weeks ago at a fancy dress party. I made an animation of the the clubs logo, which is a nasty, grinning face. I gave the character a body and dressed him in a school uniform, which was the theme of the party. I used a motion capture file of a six year old boy dancing to animate the character, then placed him in a model of the club complete with lazers, dj and projectors with this animation on it. When I put it on, people in the crowd started impersonating the charachters dance steps that were on the screen. Mad!

Re-read the initial post, slike - the crowd were clapping to the DJ but Tom (PiltoX) played some visuals that he was triggering on every second beat. The crowd switched from clapping on every beat to clapping on every other beat.
It was a magical moment. I wish I had been at the controls rather than smoking a cigarette at the time :)

I have a couple of clips one is the robinhood men in tights movie the part where they are dancing last week i had around 10 people all doing the same dance to the screen! Also i have this dancing clip of a friend of mine and they like to dance with him too. I guess my crowds like corny danceing clips that they can fallow. Also i usualy get a cheer during some part of the show.
Peace I'm out
