yeah, thats not a bad setup...its surely a certain style of mixing you'd be doing though....different focus than the random-access clip playing and VJ soft effects kinda thing that most do here...
I usually mix off of pre-mixed VCDs myself...
and yes, you can make individual tracks on DVD-R to give you non-linear access...
how can you improve it? but more more more shit! Maybe add a video camera? Otherwise, getting a computer for running VJ softs is your most versatile option...

The DVD would be good as a clompementary video source, like if you are gonna take a break and leave the thing working.
DVDs would give you problems after 24 tracks, the more closer you are recording information to the border of the disc the most problems of lecture you will have.
Get a laptop or a powerbook for sure, you just hev to have a laptop. I recomend you a Macintosh Powerbook G3 500, it is discontinued nad cost around $1000, but are the most reliable computers in the market, I have 2 of them.
Then with one laptop you can have any other secund source of video, a VCR or DVD. If you are gonna use a video camera, in my experience I would use a firewire one connected to the computer and use a software to process the image (like Videodelic).
That would be a very versatile and functional set up. Then you can jump in to more complex things like mine. The set up in the picture I use it when there is a lot of budget or when I want to experiment with something. Usually I only use one powerbook and that is it.
