hi folks,

i hope theres someone out there to help me with a special problem....

ive got a composition in AE 6.5 that is not standard PAL (720x576) - its 8:3 --> better 2x720 = 1440 x 576 pixel

my aim is, to put 2 AE cameras to one composition so that the left camera only captures whats in the left side of the composition - in 4:3 standard PAL for output.
the right camera should output the right side ONLY in 4:3 standard PAL in an other file (via render queue)

the problem on AE is, that he always scales the camera on the complete composition (8:3) and you arent able to scale the cameras to 4:3 :(

i had a workaround with 2 comps - but this is not the final solution..

i need it for projektions with 2 screens - as you can see - so it is really necessary to have all in ONE composition with 2 cams (later i need up to 12 cams in 1 comp)

is there someone out here who knows an other workaround or can help me findig the "hidden knob" for scaling AE cams?

1000 thanks ahead

You take your double-screen composition as a source for a 2 other compositions. These two other compositions would be standard 4:3, and all you've got to do is to move your source (the large composition) in the window so only half of it appears on each smaller composition.

thx many2

this know this "work-around" and it is ok for max 4 outputs...

but, what will you do - if you have more than 12 outputs from 1 composition??

i love to create a file - so to say a basic setup - and "only" replace the footage for the next project... BUT AE doesnt refreshes the small comps, where the large composition is linked - if you know, what i mean..

and positioning that large composition in that 12 small ones is quite difficult ;)

so - any other ideas ? ;)

thanx a lot

use the edit boxes in the position controls to type in numbers instead of dragging it about then

phax148,
Having used after effects a fair amount, i would 2nd many2's suggestion (which it sounds like you are already using). This is simply the way after effects is designed to be used.

I dont understand what you dont like about that solution. Even with 12 or more "camera" compositions all "filming" your one main composition.

Also, I dont understand about the small comps not refreshing...thats odd... they should certainly render the new content if you put new content in the main comp.

Certainly there could be a better way, but i dont know of any.

the small compositions should definitely refresh when you change your sources. There are two ways I remember to change your footage and keep the compositions : you can use the "replace footage" option by right-clicking on any source in your bin, or you can select one or many layers in a composition and by alt-dragging another source you will replace all sources selected but keep all the animation you've done on each layer.

I've used this technique a lot I even had to train people to use it to produce content for an installation I designed, and this is the way to go with AE, as far as I know.
