The Festival is (still) taking place in various galleries & Cinemateques around Israel.
The idea of videozone is to invite various curators from different countries / zones in the world and choose a program of video-art that represent the artists or the artistic moods expressed on the place they came from.
I managed to view a few screenings during this weekend & was happy to see that punters arrived of all ages & types.
The screenings weren?t full all the time but there was quite an interest.
As for my own impressions. Video art watching can be very energy consuming & even tiring at times. But then you can get caught by one frame or motion that does move you, or inspires, if you have the patience to wait for it.
I managed to see the Spanish & the Portuguese program.
As well as the British & the one called ?Video Sonic? dedicated to a/v
& scanned the evolution of the a/v until today.
Starting point at older works (1960+) of Len Lye, Oscar Fischinger
& others up to some known pieces of Gondry & Cunningham, the classic A/V ?Timber? (Cold Cut & Hextatic) D-fuse, & others.
It was good to see the progress along the time line, but I thought that more emphasis on new works of the contemporary a/v today could definitely add the program & give a current Point of view.
Some of the answers were found on the evening under the title:
?SomeKindofHead / Under A/V Signals / Live /Screenings
Curated by Ran Slavin. (Israeli AV artist)
A night that was dedicated to live vjing & A/V which was held in Jah-pan club, Tel Aviv,
mostly to Electro-glitch music.
The venue had 4 screens around all 4 walls & the stage was big & packed with lappies.
I was live vjing along side a great glitch crew called Micro-people djs.
There were some a/v screenings too along the night, in between the live acts, enabling the next group to set up. Other rooms displayed installations & video works.
I can mention few works I liked.
There were Very interesting works from Norway by Hc Gilje, somber with monochromatic colors, restrained but at the same time emotional.
@C, from ?Cronica?, experimental Portuguese a/v label, displayed very beautiful interesting slow-to-develop glitch A/V piece.
Lior Har-lev from Israel displayed a beautiful & disturbing video piece, & Intifada Offspring [*Intifada is the Arabic name of the Palestinian struggle] that tried to express political statements & reach an artistic dialog.
All & all it was lovely meeting artists & to see what?s going on around the world,
Listening to various points of view, as well as finally watch & hear some art.
High standards of a/v works were displayed, & I truly felt that the differences between countries were rather pale.
But it was a special-interesting evening, which ended up in lappies jam session of all present artists.
