Los Angeles based Nyx clothing is launching a range of customised jackets with built-in flexible display screens that connect to a Palm OS PDA or smartphone such as the Treo or Kyocera, and can display the message of your choice on your clothes. The message and display is more than just a passive single message - the words can be scrolled, messages rotated and NYX also has a microphone-based sound-to-light feature that enables the clothing to synch its light and message pulsing with the beat of the music.

I'm calling bullshit.

Why not just wear a portable DVD player around your neck. The resolution would be way more appealing.

Here's (http://store.markoinc.com/rubdeodurscr.html) something useful I found while searching on 'flexible screen'. ;)

I'll be more impressed with larger flexible oled displays get incorporated into clothing.

It's still pretty cool, though.

Display research is one of my areas, and I've been waiting for this to happen, washability has been a challenge.

OLED's have the advantage over crystal grown chip LED's in that OLED's can just be printed. The lifetime and brightness are low now, but they will be in mobile phones in a year. After that you could just print OLED's on the wall.

Think though about the purpose of club videos. It is all about creating a state of disorientation, wonder and transcendence, (along with whatever other alterants). It is all about the social scene, not the VJ. We'll see if there will be equal lust to take home the VJ or the DJ, but I don't think it will be influenced by what they are wearing.

Take it one step further, when everyone is wearing a display, maybe the VJ will just program the audience...

Hey, stay on topic you technomeglomaniacs! This is all about the stage outfit that screams VeeJay!

Here's the biomorphic rig-vest! In this outfit you are semi-self-contained: 6 on-board media players, wi-fi broadcast, and no waiting inline for the bathroom! There are holes for FX knobs in the chest, for when you are really crankin' on the knobs and get those chicken wings flapping.... I'll let you guess where the T-Bar goes.

And don't forget the Heads-Up-Display!

The VJ potentially has to control more effects than the DJ so why not: http://vresources.jump-gate.com/articles/vre_articles/rapporta/powerglo.jpg
or become the Cirque du Soleil character: http://www.it.fht-esslingen.de/~schmidt/vorlesungen/vr/seminar/ws9899/DataSuit_color.gif
or for Holly maybe a motion capture suit:
http://corona.bc.ca/films/groundzero/pics/mocap.jpg
or this one - only 20K$UShttp://www.metamotion.com/images/gypsy4_standing.jpg

Seriously I can't think of any DJ, including the most well known who wears something on stage that "screams DJ". The only way the can be identified is by their schleping of vinyl cases, this is passing with CD's and laptops.

Why should the VJ have to dress up?

Don't just accompany the DJ, control the atmosphere, put the screen behind the VJ and all will be well!

I met these 3 guys and a girl who form a live neon suit dance group. Pretty interesting to see breakdancing Trons.

From the gizmo.com article:

The jacket is also Internet ready, so the tools are there to create clothing with information broadcast capabilities, perhaps for teachers controlling children in a public environment, road crossing attendants outside schools, for security people, for messaging to emergency service workers, i.e., police, fire, ambulance etc., indeed anywhere where groups of people in the near vicinity need instructions or information.

I highly doubt the actually jacket is "Internet ready". Either the PDA or Smartphone that the jacket connects to, is probably capable of talking to the Internet.

Is it washable???

Where are my wireless internet ready chaps?

oh my F**kin god! I can't believe i am going to be first to post this, but...

when they can do one of these at 2000 lumens and spandex tight, I will have something to wear on stage. or anywhere for that matter...

http://www.whataretheysaying.org/blog/images/cloak.jpg

I'm wanting wireless, internet ready and source selectable between transparent and video source...

more info here:

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/techinnovations/2003-02-07-see-through_x.htm

but this is a year old, so should be in the shops about the same time as the wireless internet ready flying car.

Whoah good topic

I ALWAYS make the effort to get dressed up for my gigs. Dammit I'm an entertainer not a professional nob twiddler. ahem.

We threw a party a couple of years ago called Denim and the four of us had tailor made Denim suits for the night.... we've had B+W nights, Loud and Proud... Chocolate..... Fuzz....

Don't blend into the wallpaper... get out there.... be seen!
