how difficult would it be for VJC
to develop an online shop,
half ebay like, half paraphernalia
for fellow members to buy / sell
VJ related stuff to each other
and also maybe the odd DVD and T-shirt
???

running a full scale shop would mean that we've have to move from an ad-hoc free-time based system for admining and running the site to a situation where someone actually draws some sort of salary.
Otherwise, there is no guarantee that problems with orders etc would be sorted promptly.
This owuld especially true if the site acts as a middleman for transactions - the potential for fraud then rears its ugly head and VJF would be in a position of responsibility.
I'm not sure there would be enough of a market to support this, at least now. Maybe a simple store with T-shirts and the like on but not a full on markeyplace kind of deal.

developing the web end is pretty easy.
running a shop is a pain in the arse though.
if you sell general merchadise (tshirts, hats etc ) where do you store them all?
who will provide the cash flow to manufacture these shirts?
who has to check the orders and send the stuff out?
if you allow members to sell to each other (a la eBay) then who is responcible when someone gets ripped off (the kind of kit we would like to see being sold is very high risk in terms of scammers)
its a fulltime job to run a sucessfull shop.

Tshirts and hats?
How about something useful like buying a crate of V-4s at wholesale? I'm not saying I know how to handle that level of distribution and stuff, but we could set something up that is more like a "buyers club" rather than a normal store. People could sign up on a wait list (pay a deposit?) and opt-out or pay-in-full when they become available.
Just saying there are options. Definitely needs more research before anything could happen....

doesn't audiovisualizers do most of the above?
oli's original idea about an ebay model is definately interesting... would fit the community / p2p nature of this site. there are quite a few shops on there now? some ebay like system has got to offer syndication/reseller type services.
hmm. well, i'm not really up on what ebay is up to nowadays, just thinking aloud.
