View Full Version : VJC VJ top 20

Oli recently posted the "VJ Top 20" from the UK publication of "DJ Mag", which left many gaps from VJ's not based in the UK or Euroland.
So I was wondering what that same list would look like if it was a bit more internationally inspired?
Not that list's are so important, but maybe we could start a monthly top 20 VJ's on VJC, and base the voting criteria on the monthly output of the list's VJ's..
Any thoughts?
maybe a ego list might be a terrible idea too, but it might be better than a DJ Mag
telling us who the VJ hero's are each month..
;)

inspiration besides innovation is maybe the keyword here...
cause i don't see any useful measurement for a compiling
a "top vj list" but wanna to see links to references for that
and *not* just name dropping
and talking bout inspiration, how about moving that topic there? ;)

I don't think the point of the DJ mag list is to tell _us_ who the VJ heroes are. As we're all in the scene, we already know who the bright lights are.
The point of the DJ mag list is, I think, to get exposure for VJs (and thus the VJ scene) outside of the scene itself - among the DJs, wannabe DJs and interested clubbers who read the magazine.
I think the only kind of useful VJ list is one that is explicitly based on the personal, subjective preference of a person (or group of people). That way, we all know it is not supposed to have any kind of objective claim.
Maybe we should all post our personal lists and draw our own conclusions from names that keep coming up, rather than trying to create one unified list.
Dan.

This would certainly prove a more interesting view of those hero's, which would still be subjective, but without the politic's of official lists..

I agree with dan in all aspects.
Also, I wonder how would all the output be evaluated. I don't think there's much people here in Argentina to check the output from the few VJs that are active. Also, we don't get as many chances to perform as in other countries, usually.

all sounds like bum-licking/sniffing to me, woof-woof :P
how about a place to upload showreels (similar to the Kutup exchange server) with a voting system attached?
then we could all pile over here to discuss the results ad infinitum
could be a good addition to the publicity machine, and will definitely give people a sort of visual handle on the people they're talking to/voting for

no visual grand prix pls.....
but i support dans idea of posting multiple indivdual lists
of important vj's with direct linx to their shining work
that put them on that list...

I think you have to rate the VJs as you rate the DJs: going to gigs and see how well they work in the environment. You can look at a showreel of 5 minutes and find it very pretty, but what happens on a live setup on a gig where performance could last hours? Otherwise i'll start rating DJs by their studio mixes.
You can get a pretty good idea of what sort of content the guy works, but the content alone doesn't make the whole performance.

How about if we all just pay about as much attention to the Top 20 VJs list as the DJs pay to the DJ list. (Read: none, unless you're in it and need it.) And maybe just get on with making the best work we possibly can...

i wanna see a (sampler) VJ's top 20, not whos da bomm, but what are smapler VJs playing
bobby dobbs's right, it's kinda silly. am glad for the peeps that were on the list, kudo 2 'em, but since we're just babies in the media world its really none of our prolem who is the VJ tiesto, knowadamean?

hmmm,
maybe a "mover and shaker's" would be more appropiate.
The thing is taking this "top" notion out of the equation.
No top would mean no best kinda thing, and thus it could be more of a coprehensive sorta list.

if you must know,
it's Micha Klein who is officially appointed
to doing Tiesto's visuals,
as well as performing alongside him...

My list would be (in no paticular order)
1 Madam Chao
2 VJ MMM
3 those inside guys
4 Exceeda
5 Analogue VJ Rod
...but I haven't seen many of those mentioned on the top 20 list either..
As for movers and shakers, I'd have to mostly agree with the top 20 list, but could certainly think of another 20 that could be included.

I had a demo sent to me a few months ago. It?s cool if you like psy-trance and 3D. They said it took 6 years to put it together. The characters reminded me of the Megaman videogame from back in the day with a psychedelic touch.

it would be great to see an argentinian (or any other south american country) name in that list, just like hernan cattaneo in the dj top10
this top ten (or 20 in this case) list only show us who is getting good promotion and international recognition, but as any dj list the names in it probably won't be the same that in your own..
