Anybody try one of these yet?

Any other suggestions for video scratching?

I don't like the feel of a knob, pitch wheel or slider. I'd love to be able to have a little jog/shuttle setup in addition to more standard midi gear.

Hi!

I bought this Jog Shuttle 2 weeks ago. I use it for working in Premiere, AE , Combustion. But you can use it in some Music Editing Software too. like Nuendo .
If you have to edit a mass of clips , this little thing can help you to
do it in less time.
- But i don?t think that you can use this shuttle in a live setup , to trigger your clips or sth like that.
I dont?t know a VJ Software where this shuttle could be used.

- maybe i`m wrong;)

Hey, rockid how does the controller hold up in those adobe apps? Am a keen user too and am wondering if the JS2 has latency? I'm fed up with interfaces to software that leave a little lag - it's no good when you're editing.

Cheers

The jog/shuttle is the CONTOUR SHUTTLE PRO. It is fantastic for editing, but of course if you are controlling a camera or tapedeck there will be serious lag from the tapedrive not the controller. I've started to cut my loops in the Quicktime Player because the Contour makes even that cheapo app into a fast usable editor. I don't need to launch FinalCut unless I'm working with effects or layers, but FCP is 100% easier with it, too. Mostly it does not scrub, but you have accurate frame-by-frame and speed control over most apps with a timeline.

VDMX-2 on the Mac has settings for using this controller.

Holly.

Yuck to small and puck like (damn those ugly mac mice too).... get a Commandpost... Jog&SHuttle, T-bar, Joystick & 15 buttons on USB for $30US!!!! (clearance) THEY SHIT ALL OVER THIS CONTROLLER. Support for ALL THE MAIN VIDEO APPS.... PC & MAC!!!

Commandpost will soon have support in SVi, Possibly a new app coming out called REZ and HeyVJ when it emerges.

You seem a little cranky today Morph. All yer posts have bite. Upset at being left outa AVIT?

Commandpost feels a little plastic joysticky (boytoy) and the button pad looks like a receptionist's switchboard, but the internal glow definitely has wooo factor. I know you're a gaming fan so the wankerstick probably feels right in your hands. Must be a boy thing.

Contour is ergonomic. While it's not designed for VJing or T-bar toggling it's wiped hours off my editing time without straining my hand. The buttons all rest under my fingers and I scrub with the thumb. You don't have to look at it to use it. Your eyes stay on the screen where they belong. It's sturdy and low-profile like a small bubble that hugs the table. Definitely a plus to anyone spending hours in a NLE, but I thought it felt a little too serene for VDMX.

Most guys would probably rather wag their stick in performance.

Hmmm not having the best of days no, and I wish I could been @ AVIT but, having a huge ocean or 2 in the way makes it hard..... nah thats not the reason I'm a bit grumpy. Still as I said the commandpost unit is cheaper and better.

Well, my reasoning was that the Command post looks very "plastic," so I'm suspicious of its durability. Also, it doesn't seem to have a very standardized interface. And, as far as looks go, I'd say the Commandpost looks like a cheap bit of Halloween decoration that hasn't had the little ghost and goblin eye stickers applied yet. What I really want is a jog/shuttle dial, and the rest of the Command Post would just eat up real estate.
Anybody tried using a Commandpost, or this other controller with visualJockey? Does it pop up as a joystick-like device? I'm assuming they both provide true analog input of some sort, as opposed to some sort of keystroke faking.

Actually I have had a commandpost for quite some time now and its VERY solid little UNIT, its actually nice solid metal underneath, all the controls are solid and durable, internal lighting (though weak) is invaluable. I would say its no more toy looking (or less durable) than the Contour unit.

As for controller, it fully emulates (and you can reassign) to keyboad strockes in ANY app, comes with templates for HEAPS of apps. However the keystroke emulation is done by the software, the PC actually sees it as a directInput device and there are a number of DirectX VJ apps now looking to take advantage of the full range of control data coming from the unit.

Okay, I'll re-evaluate the "Command Post".

Is there a particular place that has them at a sale price?

I can't even remember the site I bought mine from......I know it was a US site and they had them for $30..... when it gets implemented in all the big VJ apps all the midi kids will kick themselves :D

i've got one of the contour shuttle pro, basically second holly...

i think you've got to question how you would use it live... i haven't really found it much use, not really 'sharp' enough for video scratch and everything is best clocksync'd imho. i've found a little tablet and stylus best, doubles as mouse for your vjsoft GUI and gives amazing video-scratch, and best of all it packs flat and has no buttons to break.

having said that, i'm going to give it a go with vdmx3 now i can map anything to anything... but it will be for interface control not video scratch.

...Until somebody wants to do any sort of collaboration.

The big advantage of midi is that it allows you to string together equipment, send the same message to multiple machines, and various other goodies that a dedicated controller on one machine can't do.

So, I don't think I'll be throwing out my midi gear if I get a command post, I'll just be adding another piece and feeling slightly limited by the fact that it will only be useful on one machine.

Hmmmm valid points, still I don't really like the midi stuff thats out @ the momment (most of it is WAY over priced) and I see plenty of cool (cheep) USB things just waiting for VJ soft to take advantage of them.....

As for collab... is it not possible to find something that will split a USB signal??? *shrug* I like a tight rig and if I collab it is more likely going to be @ the mixer not on a controller/control data.

Sorry to resurrect a long dead thread. I've been looking for weeks now and havent been able to find an XP driver for the CommandPost. I was hoping that maybe someone might be able to hook me up with the driver/program files im missing.

Many thanks,
Victor F.

I Think it's discontinued. I have version 2.0 - the latest one they made. Let me know if you still need it.

Hmmmm this thread is a bit of a blast from the past, might see what I can do about CommandPost support in OpenTZT, if not maybe get a CommandPost to MIDI app (yes, contrary to VERY old posts I am pro-midi, hell I was even involved in DM2midi)

Well, I'm a WinXP input freak - I have a CommandPost, ShuttlePro2, DM2, and PCR-30 Midi keyboard. Both the CommandPost and ShuttlePro2 have simular drivers. The driver senses the active program and loads a keyboard shortcut overlay for that program. Both come with some pre-made video editing overlays, and it's easy to make new ones (for visual proggies). Both might be able to be reprogrammed for midi (probably with the same driver, being keyboard shortcut based). I wonder how the midi resolution might be though - I was disapointed with the XY joystick on the DM2 (maybe a bad DM2?). The DM2 was also hard to configure, I thought (no midi genius here!), and is not configured on my latest system.

I prefer the ShuttlePro2 over the CommandPost/DM2 for tactile response, strength and looks - but I was an old school video TAPE editor... so maybe I'm a bit biased! lol... I use my PCR-30 midi keyboard now mostly.

I can see where the DM2 and CommandPost would be an ideal choice for new VJ's not wanting to jump into expensive midi controllers. They can be found used and on ebay really cheap! And the DM2 actually has a good layout with lots of usable configs, for it's size. But the setup and config needs to be easier, in my opinion...

I found and installed the 2.0 software but It still wouldn't work (it would however, work on my winMe computer, that computer has since been retired and I am unable to pull whatever driver it was using).
I installed the ShuttlePro2 software but I'm guessing I have to tweak it to work with commandpost? As it's (obviously) not recognizing the CP.

All I need this thing to do is emulate keystrokes so I can use it in PremierePro. I appreciate the help thus far, thanks!

i was trying to write a glovepie patch for scrubbing with a joystick in premiere, but it didn't turn out to be that good, maybe i should go back and try again.
