I was browsing the web the other day when i came across this (http://www.sony.co.jp/Products/mddiscam/home/style_discam/vj/) its not so much the technology that is intresting (mini disk camcorders sound a bit dodgy to me) but the fact that sony are selling something based on the fact that it could be of use to VJs is very intresting - who knows they might start actually designing stuff for vjs

yeah, that is kind of interesting...although I'm not seeing what is so "VJ" about the camera that isn't on any other camera...
but the marketing to VJs specifically is quite encouraging.

maybe it gives you more immediate random access or looping possibilities similar to a dvd but on a smaller disk that cant be scratched when stacked outside a case.]
sorry, that sounded too close to something that could be saying.
i agree though, i cant image investing in a camera that records onto md

just looked at the site, it also has an ether net connection to d.l clips to your computer. sounds faster than log/digitize/clean up etc. Also it says that you can delete something you shot if you dont like it, prob with out having to rewind. but it also looks like its mpeg1 or something other than full rez video. so quality ...maybe be best, but also may be already more optimized for a vj app that used 1/2 res clips. Ill still take a dv cam though.

The DCM-M1 has been around for a few years. It records MPEG-2 onto a DATA MD, sound in ATRAC. It also allows for the establishement of an ethernet connection direcly to the camera, so as to view clips online.
Problem is, max of 20 min per MD, and laughable 12KB/sec Ethernet download speed.
However, this must be (I could be wrong) the cheapest make-shift touch-screen VJ interface around. And 20min is a very long time in terms of loops/samples.
This camera, and pretty much MD DATA as a format, has been discontinued by Sony, but if anyone out there wants to get rid of one of these, please email me.
For more info in this camera, run a search at www.minidisc.org

I've always been a fan of MD. This sounds like the perfect "middleground" between digi still cams with mpeg movie mode, and a full fledged DV cam. Would probably work great with Motion Dive.

has everyone lost it or what???
i posted this about a year ago and was intrested in the way that they were marketing it - the unit is now out of production and was shite anyway by all accounts - one year on and people have got all excited about it again?? - i'm sure you can buy one from ebay if you must - but please don't blame me when it turns out to be total crap!!
