Hello all,
I have the option to do a little VJ gathering at the upcoming Chaos Communication Congress - the 21st anual hacker conference in Berlin/Germany organized by the chaos computer club. the event is between the 27th and 29th December 2004 . We would have one third of the Art and Beauty Floor in the Berlin Congress Hall. The conference (21C3 the usual suspekts) at large will host talks projects and meeting places with topics ranging from computer security to roboter science to lockpicking and much more. Among the specials is a the art and beauty area - a whole floor dedicated to making art with the computer (or other elektronic or electric machines) Its usually filled with projects from the c-base and a blinkenarea with small working models and rebuilds of the famous blinkenlights project. As first featured on the Chaos Communication Camp OpenAirVIT in 2003 we could continue our relationship with the CCC and be part of this great gathering.
The idea:
We have 3 days for vjs to be inspired from and collaborate with each other and the hacking society. Work together on projects present our art to the geeks, the press and the interested one day visitors or simply talk about all the different ideas - political, content, art, gear or software related - in a group in one place.
Other possibilities:
This might also be the right place for a freeframe developers meeting or others in the visual software clan to get in touch with other coders.
Another idea floating around is to make the last day a special "presentation day" so that a possible project that wants to be shown (either made at the congress or at home) has a proper setting.
If we react soon there is also the little bandwidth to have a stream go outside for the rest of the world to see what we are doing.
The technical side:
The place will be equipped with multiple beamers (3 at least) and a sound system (record tables mixa speakers etcetc). big network and a bar....
tables chairs couches or whatever needs to be determined and can be arranged somehow.
The organizational side:
Prototypen (http://www.prototypen.com/wiki/) MoGreens, fRED and fALk(that happens to be me) will take on the organization if there is enough interest in the community to support such an idea.
Of course all ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Ok cool. So it seems there is interest :) Very great. There is the first "art & beauty" organizational meeting next week thursday. I will then tell the orga crew that we have enough interest and that the space is reserved for us. We will be working closely with the pyonen - a group of people who will do the lightning at the whole event and the c-base who will make our place comfortable. I try to gauge what will be needed by us. Its nice to have such a great lead time to the event :) It ensure some flexibility of what will go on.
Maybe we orient the thing on the (slightly chaotic) OpenAirVIT from last year in a similar constellation. No really fixed schedules just see what happens and who comes and then work from there. Base the display rotation on the beamers at night on the people who are there during the day and have interest in playing maybe do the laptopjammy. The only big thing I would change is that we should give this thing a topic. Something that is interesting to us all. Like "The all seeing eye" or the such. We are totally open for ideas. Around that theme some could work on a plug in. A general projection concept. A story line or simple plain visuals. I think that would give this whole thing a better meaning - but its only our opinion maybe you have others - we would like to know :)
What we would like to know from those interested to come:
What would you like at the event?
Rather just open creative space with discussion round tables and open topic.
Little chaos and just see who is there and who wants to do any kind of lecturing?
Or a fixed schedule with events and speakers set before the event?
Just be nice to each other and work on some projects?
A fixed project with an idea or a theme beforehand?
Just gathering what people would think this could look like...

All the ideas you mention are necassary to some extent, i think that a
fixed schedule is nice but a bit of kaoss is also necassary. So i say have one moment reserved for random lectures and chaos and have an fixied programme alongside that.

yeah i think best of both would be the thing to do!
i would def. structurise the presentations/lectures. nothing is more ennoying then some random speeches and discussions, and ppl half listening to that. if ppl know in advance what to expect they can make a decision wether to go and listen or not.
On the other hand some structurised visual perfomances can work well, but maybe the possibility to create a visual-lab where anybody can plug and play would be kewll as well.
it also depends on the locations and equipment...
Prolly if u make a plan (to some extend), the chaos will come automatically.
the other way around is much harder to achieve;-)

i def favour a lab situation over a traditional classroom thingy if possible.
i guess it all depends if its poss to have two things happening at
one time. if so we could have a traditional lecture and a plug'n'play lab with a different style lecturing too
i would be up for a midified vj lab if minimal requirements are fulfilled.

i would be up for a midified vj lab if minimal requirements are fulfilled.
what would those requirements be?
for the other comments I try to figure out how to go on that. I think the core idea will be to have some kind of big lab where people are sitting together and doing things and then have that pepped up with some specials like talks during the day - one to many talks are just so yesterday maybe some group discussions would be a better term and probably more suitable for the lab/club/chill area like installation on the compound. It will be all one place so have numerous events next to each other is out of question (which is why I call it an AVITmini). That is not a bad thing at all (lots of complaining during the big AVITs that people could not attend the interesting classes since they where all next to each other).
It also depends on who is coming. Seeing from this threat and my inbox right now people who are in the bussiness for a long time seem to be interested most. That would leave us to discuss our approach and our technics and leave out the newbie stuff (how to produce good visuals and the like). But I do not want to rule out the newbies and they are very welcome if any want to come.
I think the speciality of the event is really learning from each other hands on even if we are already on a high level and found our style. So discussion can go from personal experiences own style and approach and content, distribution problems and the like. To put that in a schedule I would need a list of people who surely want to come.
What I oppose is that some feel superior to others at such an event so every one coming should have the same options of showing work and present their ideas (if they happen to want to do this). So maybe as an idea I could make an open schedule thats going to be filled in before the event and on the event for those who couldn?t decide before ;) So everyone fills in their area and then we see from there? I will send out call for "papers" and the stuff after the meeting next thursday. And will make a schedule online for people to see.
PS: As you see I try to make this whole planning stage as transparent as possible I hope people are not put off by that. Its not a sign of chaos just yet ? its just that people can veto in if they do not agree with the direction things take and have their ideas incorporated into the whole concept.
People who have been at OpenAirVIT maybe can raise their opinions and how things should be different this time and what you would like to keep.

normaly at the congress the people sleep and relax somewhere between their harddisk and their keyboard. this is not very comfortabel but hackers need only few comfort (mousepad?).
i thought about offering my flat as sleeping place for some people. its not a palace but for a few days it will be enough. its ten minutes by foot to the congress center. i will post more infos about this possibility when i now how many places i can offer (ca.6).
