Long time has elapsed and apparently nobody knows nothing about Boemm (http://www.audiovisualizers.com/toolshak/vjprgpix/boemm/boemm.htm)
Yeah! curiously a very powerful VJ program according the scarce information available on the Dave site (until now the only one Website talking about this misterious proggy)
So, tired of unsuccessful results looking for info on the virtual world, I thought maybe the real world could provide me more accurate answers about Boemm... I don?t know why, but I have the hunch the people of Derivative (Touch), could know something about this intriguing Boemm VJ program.
What do you think?

why would derivative know about this software? :p
it looks like one of these numerous VJ softwares which were never finished.

I guess I should have removed it by now - but the secret is: Boemm is a previous/early incarnation of robotfunks software.
He had sent me info on it way back but told me to keep it hush-hush...but somewhere along the line, I completely forgot who or why someone sent it to me (short term memory?) - and decided to list it - then many years later he told me that was him - and that the software had evolved into flowmotion now.
mystery solved!

It was really a school project I was involved in together with Anton Bensdorp, Guido Stulemeyer and Ivo van Oosterhout.
It has some similar aspects to flowmotion (5 layers, loopbased sequence interface) but is very different really and much simpler.
I kept developing it further after the school project was finished for some time, then spent a year at http://v2.nl working on the interface for the Epic Generator project initiated by cut up VJ Geert Mul. A few months after that I started working on Flowmotion.
It was never called BOEMM!, we never got round to naming it, the text was just a visual we used with it when the snapshot was taken. We didn't mind the name either though.
It is basically a 16 step sequencer that can control visibility on/off, blend, size and time for up to 5 clips. all kinds of transfer modes/inks can be used (like in Motion Dive and Flowmotion)
If anybody is interested, (and I can find it) I could offer it as freeware, I'm sure the others involved would agree. Don't expect anything really powerful tho.

there can never be enough freeware, in my opinion...(of course no offence to anyone selling software) :)

OF COURSE Jilt, I am the first one on the row hoping to put my claws on that pretty neat and good looking old/early predecessor prototype of your beloved FlowMotion.
I?ll keep my fingers crossed hoping you can find it and the best at all you can give it to us for free :)

Hmmm interesting how it has a BETTER UI than flowmotion, was someone else working on that side of things on that project Jilt???

I will talk to the others and see if I can find the last version of it... to finally release it into the public.
regarding the user interface :) as an interaction designer by trade i think a user interface is a bit more than how something looks .. it is far easier for such a limited app to have a clean look .. but the guy who designed the one for BOEMM, Anton Bensdorp told me how he hated the design now and how he likes flowmotion's one so much .. so I guess thats very personal.
On the subject of UI design, I've been playing a bit with flowmotion's design for the next version, attaching an image here, I'm curious to your opinions about it.

Hmmm looks better Jilt. A few more labels here and there wouldn't go astray.
BTW what are you using to get you output from that UI 3x zoom scanny??? BTW is it still loading the entire clip banks into RAM?? or just the necessary clips now....
Hmmm yeah your right about UIs in general and but I still personally think that anyone beginning with FLow is gonna have a hard time "getting" that UI, I think the main this is since you designed it you know what everything does and so maybe you presume too much, I read the docs and tried to play with it (had trouble with the RAM overflowing) abd loooking @ that pic I can still hardly figure out what does what, maybe its easier for someone that uses midi all the time if the UI is anything like other more musical apps, but I know a major lack of labeling stumps me on most of the functions...
An idea how about tool tips with the label on roll or right click??? that would take up space and would just get ppl started, maybe then ppl can switch it off when they are comfortable.

Yeah your absolutely right about tooltips. I have been planning to add these for ages.
It still preloads everything into RAM. It is what changes the speed from way below acceptable to rather swift. You really want at least 512 mb onboard to properly run it.
You can use a scanny to zoom into the preview screen but if you have a second (tv) output it can use that as fullscreen out. I don't have a scanny, but my lappy has a good tv output (with size adjustable in little steps so no underscan/border problem) and it works great. I'll have a review on this lappy (pro-star) soon.

yup i got it delivered last friday morning .. just in time for leeds.
with dual screen, vid in/out, tv tuner on board i think this might be the ultimate vj lappy ... at least i havent found anything better ..especially at the price.
2.4 ghz p4 (non mobile) .. 1024 mem .. 15.7 inch lcd .. dvd player/cdrw and small things like next / prev volume up/down knobs on the front that work in media player and other apps .. lets just say i love it to bits (its also 5x as fast as my other computer). Its only a bit big and heavy but I dont intend to use this on the train.

Hey Jilt, I?m still praying you can be able to get the last version of Boemm as you said, to give me/us a free copy very very soon.
Don?t worry if it is not powerful enough, since I?m sure that with this elegant proggy I could rescue/resurrect a couple of old lappys (Pentium I 133mgz) for proper VJ work.
So, please, please, please, make your best effort to help me out with this Lazarus project. :D

Well Jilt, I guess you has been too busy deciphering and figuring out all the marvels inside your new ProStar laptop (among so many other things), but man, a short reply to my Boemm request doesn?t hurt to anybody... ?right?
I?m really hoping to resurrect these old laptops for VJing with your goodie ASAP :)
