View Full Version : Live analog performance

I couldn't find a forum that was right for this post but this one will do.

Do any of you do live analog things in your performances?

I do visuals for a drone/noise/electronics duo. My friend Iain does the music. He always has a big live element to his music- not just eq-ing computer playout.

So I started doing visuals live, eg macro shots of tiny polarised light sculptures on turntables shot with slow shutter gain. For a very crackley noise piece I played a hairdryer with streamers into the camera. Using camera neg effect and additional lighting from a little strobe light. Our early sets had a whole set of visuals consisting of macro shots of a coke bottle. Backlighting from a video monitor showing white noise or camera feedback.

I think these ideas came from seeing Max Eastly doing his live sound sculptures.

I remember reading a review of someone doing visuals with Thomas Koner ( i think ) where they played a 16mm loop through a chemical bath so it degraded. They musicians sampled and processed the projector noise and bubbling film sounds.

Does anyone here work in these ways?

Thanks
Rick

self created that is... were videos of glowstick deaths... snapping them in half, disecting them, spilling their guts into and onto stuff. it used to be ritual for my crew to kill a 'stick on site and film it if there were candykids about... oh the looks you'll get!

Warning: this is MESSY. be prepared or don't care... excellent results

Tip: Use different colors, in as dark enviro as possible.

also look for a chemical called Flouro(a?)cine. when powdered and sprinkled onto still water in a clear container w/ a blacklight close by the results are A-freakin-mazing (filmed this would make awesome footage, I saw this "trick" at an afterparty)
Warning: if flouracine touches ANYTHING it will glow under blacklight for a few days/weeks... ANYTHING... eyes, mouth, skin, clothes, tables, EVERYTHING.
PS. it's not real toxic (i.e. you won't go blind/die)

..james...

(sounds like a cool show rick! props)

Someone mentioned that at the Big Chill this year, there was a group how did a show that used a small galss aquarium with plants and insects in, lit very carefully with tiny stgae lights and shot from multiple angles on various cameras. Sounded amazing - wish I had seen it.

Anyone know who it was?

Most of this is probably obvious, but...

I'm a big fan of cameras live. Feedback is always fun to play with, especially when you can get the crowd in between the camera and the screen. Different types of monitors/screen provide different ranges of feedback (lcds are different then tvs are different than projectors, etc).

Lava lamps, oil wheels, and other various spencer-esque lights are always good. I love the imagin1son setup. I've been wanting to incorporate a waterproof speaker mouted horizontally for quite some time. It's good to see somebody doing it.

Food coloring and cold water can provide some nice effects too.

Hey, Kommy...

I don't disagree with you, but where did that come from?

Oh, I think I get it. Like blue is the new black. Hmmm... I guess I'm not in the loop enough to know what everyone is doing, but I am guilting of using some "cars going really fast" footage. :)

I have yet to actually use the food coloring thing live, but have mucked about with it some at home.

surely thats kinda the point of talking about it...

If nobody actually takes ideas from the conversations we have on VJForums then all we are doing is showing off about what we have seen or done in order to big ourselves up.

These things may be cliches, but well executed they could still form a valubale part of a show.

http://www.shiffman.net/swarm.html
Check the images and the 3 short demos and fly!

i'd love to do something similar in a gig!!
It's fenomemal this guy, i love this installation, this style of effect
please someone write something similar as a freeframe plugin!

Can u imagine this effect with parametres like number and size of the brush vary in sinch with music...aaaa wow! definitely a style of audiovisual live art!!! with live video capture .
I want, i want, :jump2: :jump: :D ;)   :P

P.S.: W le jolle (It's italian gergo):yep:

The imagin1son stuff is great. I love their use of cameras and puppetry. It would be nice to seem more analog stuff like this about.

The shiffman work is also great. Need some freeframe plugins like that. ;)

sometymes,,,, we use two cams,,, on on the dj and one that we use,
we usaully turn slow shutter on and turn it towards the monitor, or just fuck wiv light feed back, and have also had me or me pardner wandering round, (wiv in reach o cable to mixer) throwing the camera round and creating feed back,,,,
at a a new years gig last new years we had a real long as cable and I was swinging the cam around and creating live feed back,,,
we only play wiv analog so we do gets inventive,,, we also have used a pen cam, and servallience cams in our preformances, and also have set up 2 or 3 moniters and manually created feed back and played it,,,,

I recently visited a workshop by a french group caled metamkine (http://metamkine.free.fr/) They used 8 16mm projecors operated by two people and one was working on sound generated by difernt objects and than modified troug an analogue syinth and a mixer. The analog imge can be manipulated to qite some extent if you have such gera to you disposal (in their studio they have a 16mm processing machine). They also did the trick with bleach being applyed to film while projecting, only sacrifice two projectors for that since its virtualy immpossible to clean them after.

If you get a chance to see their performance i recomend them.
