hello there, i'm jaqx, been actively reading these forums for over a year and had my first gig last saturday. I veejayed for some local djs and for the spanish techno dj Angel Molina at Hi Fi bar in Vicente Lopez, argentina.
i was given 5 days notice, so i was forced rip material of dvd's and work with that. For the first dj i played some random flash ant qt movies. Then for Angel Molina i played cartoons i ripped from the movie Tank Girl. These cartoons are quality, and part of my hope was that someone at the venue would have read the Tank Girl comics and recognise the character. I applied the RGB decomposition effect to some videos, the idea was to simulate when a comic was ill printed. after that i played some B & W loops i got from and old mexican movie (bugambilia), and over those, some flash files luma filtered. I tried to keep effects to a minimum and do as much pure video as possible. see what i am talking about: http://homepage.mac.com/joaquinx/PhotoAlbum2.html
there was a cameraman doing live feeds from the dj's booth, that was a cool idea cause i got some time off to drink, dance and go to the bathroom. Besides, everyone loved to watch the deejays doing their tricks and magic with decks and vinyls.
the gig ended at 9am and i was waisted but happy. Nothing failed technology-wise which is cool. My set up was an ibook G4 running arkaos, Panasonic V5 mixer, 2 monitors video matrix, dvd player, VCR for recording the set, and my camera fellow used a Sony MiniDV cam.
i regret not having my own material. I am currently struggling to buy a Mini DV camera, to me veejaying is all about playing your own videos. looking at the brighter side i had a splendid time and got to know very interesting people.
