UMmm.. I need some help understanding the quick time format so I can upload my my demo to a free internet media host that requires a quick time file that has been streaming enabled.
I know that certain VJ softs play back quicktime as well as apples own qt player. But I need to understand it from a streaming point of view. I have the latest free version of the player from apple , does that mean that I will be able to encode in a proggy like AE to convert a DV stream for QT and the result be the most current available? or will I have to get hold of the full pro version of QT from APPLE or wherever to get the streaming enabled format? Does anyone know if there are differences in the .mov format within releases of QT . For example if I encode a file with QT pro 6 , can that file then be played with a lesser version of the player ?

Can someone turn on the lights:)

Quicktime comes in two formats streaming (rtsp://...) and progressive download (http://...). You will not be able to create the streaming kind without additional software investments. Progressive download is appropriate for any computer at any bandwidth connection and embeds into your html page the same as a JPEG or GIF. Even if your webhost supports streaming Quicktime, you are better off providing a progressive download file. Trust me, I've been doing this for years.

There are plenty of tricks to control the movie in your webpage, but for starters just link to the movie so it opens in a seperate browser window like this: ( <a href="MY_MOVIE.mov" target=blank> )

If you have After Effects or your video NLE can save as Quicktime, then you don't need to invest in anything else. When you save the file, make it 320x240 and choose a frame rate (most people save at 12fps or 15fps for web delivery). Save the file with the ".mov" suffix. Under "OPTIONS" select the "Sorenson Video 3" codec set to BEST quality with a limited bitrate of 50 K bytes per second. Leave "Keyframe every ___" unselected. Save the audio as "QDesign Music 2, mono, 22khz, 16 bits.

This will start you out with a pretty good looking and sounding file that will play on any computer that has QuickTime 5 installed. You might want to let people know how big the file size is and how long the movie runs and that they will need QT5. There are hundreds of variables and settings that you can tweek to improve the look and sound of your movie, but this should get you started.
