View Full Version : screen idea?

hey all
we're trying to work out a way to rear project onto high side screens onstage...
i'm not sure whether to get spandex screens made up for this - but the picture below is the idea...
a collapsable coat rack that is weighted down by sand bags at the bottom
some g clamps that can hold the screen above the rack...
don't know what screen or what framing yet but they would be maybe 4 feet across...
has anyone done this kind of thing before or is it just too dumb to try?
i guess we need projector stands too... so far we've managed to sit them on speaker stacks but now that we want higher screens we'll prob have to look at stands mentioned in other threads
we need it all to collapse down for overseas travel too so as light as possible...
eeer, obviously new to setting up screens... ;)
any advice would be appreciated!
thanks

Yeah I have 2 Fast Fold (Da-Lite) screens, they are pretty inexpensive to buy and i have found it is really the only thing that totally cuts out the projector light.

check out the screens that v-lux made for the freq nasty show using coat racks ther quite simple but look very cool!

The torque on those clamps along the top of the clothes rail, will be more than you'd imagine - I'd say if knocked you may have trouble. Frankly. it looks a bit heath-robinson to me, and those clothes racks are usually heavy. As tom says - hire some fast-folds and add the cost to your fee - and for the future, look at some of the own-design screens here - some of them look really good.

thanks everyone!
we were wanting to travel with our own screens & projectors cause we'll be going o/s and wanted to be able to set them up and bring them on stage just before the gig.
but yeah, will check the site for more screen advice, custom made spandex ones & that guy who makes them in brixton... the v-lux screens are wicked to be sure - perspex huh? .... but not high enough, maybe we could get a coat rack that extended higher...
by the way, i went to tottenham court road today and everyone is trying to sell me the sony HS3 1200 lumen... for about 1200 pounds... are these goodies? ( do like the short throw lens)
thanks again for all the help. this forum is awesome!

Anyone got any experience on projecting on to acrylic type material, (white frosted type stuff)
For back / front projecting - preferably quite think stuff.
Had one of those crazy brainwaves that involved many small sheets of it interconnectable. 2ft x 2ft max - for scalable screen sizes... is it feasable ?
Could it work well ?
Iv seen the really nice (and expensive) diffusion screens for daylight projecting - little bit outta my budget though

Well i was looking at the etched acrylic for the purpose, so already frosted, just wondering if anyone has any experience doing gigs with it really, pros / cons thickness of sheets, possible refraction problems etc...

steve, when we had freq nasty play he had two small screens on the stage made out of 5mm perspex with both sides sandblasted with the image projected from the rear, the image looked pristine, the guys who made them told that when the screens got marked or dirty they just got them re-blatsed.

ps i'll try and get some pics!!!

Super, sounds great,
I was thinking about perspex as well, but its generally alot more fragile (not good with someone like me) be interested to see the results though.
Im guessing you need to be VERY careful when getting these sandblasted.
D'ya know if they work well from the front too ?
P.S the idea for the multiple screen thingy came from the pics posted here

forgot acrylic creens for touring...better is "holopro", a window of special glass, no scratches, not so lightly breaking, transportable safe in a case (if you are traveling with a night-liner or truck.)
other idea is to use reflectors like the film-lighting guys using it...very light, not breakable and mountable with "magic-claps" on tripod's...for finding solutions normwise its cost's money...or a booking!!
good luck,

well seing as you can pick up a 2000lumen projector for about ?1500 give or take a couple ov hundered quid i'd stear clear, but i dont like useing anything less then 2000lumen in a gig space because i will allways know whatever the lighting is doing within the space you have half a chance of your visuals being seen :)

Hey Gene
Just to let you know,
The Coat rails are pretty light to be honest and we have flown with them a few times, they pack up pretty small too.
They are also adjustable in terms of height.
If anyone has seen them looking a bit low, the reason would be that we have to squeeze them in so tight on alot of stages that there isnt enough room to position the projectors any higher.
I thought that everything we VJs are doing is a bit heath robinson, afterall what else can you do on non corporate budgets?
So yes, they are a bit heath robinson, once ive got a decent amount of cash together im gonna get some nice purpose built jobs made, but until then im happy to settle for the cheap and cheerfull.
Anyway, you cant see em when its dark.
As for Torque? Im not quite sure what that means? Isnt it a term for something undergoing rotation? anyway
The screens just hang off the stands, and we put stage weights on the bottom to stop them moving.
If anybody is interested in our new improved screens (the ones that Signal55 / NO SIGNAL) is talking about were the prototypes) then get in touch.

Please excuse my ignorance
