Hey all...as the visual/VJ scene over here is rapidly growing i am very seriously thinking of organizing an AVit in Mexico city having both mexican and foreign visual artists performing...i would appreciate any ideas, support and help from people who have done this before...where to start for sponsors, what kinda place would be an ideal venue and what would be the basic needs for a succesful AVit, among the many other things i have to take in account...
thanks...

Cool :)

Im sure people from avit uk and avit north america will be glad to give you various tips, if you dont mind hanging on for a while as time is in limited supply for most peeps.

Ive helped a bit with the UK avit over the last few years, but more on their internet stuff than anything else, so my advice is a bit limited. Off the top of my head I would say the most important starting point it to find a decent number of people who are willing to put time and effort into organising avit in your country. Experience so far seems to suggest that ideally you need at least a few people who live in or near the chosen city/town where you plan to hold the avit event.

As for funding/sposorship its not really my area, but a first step would be to find out if there are any arts funding organisations in your country or region, and to have a look at their application forms, and how long they require to make a decision etc. avit UK has done better with this kind of funding in the past than commercial sponsorship from companies, but I think (someone correct me if Im wrong) avit north america has got most of their money from commercial sponsors.

In more general global terms, avit is keen to get some kind of structure going to provide support & resources with people who want to setup avits in other countries, but as always there has not been enough spare time for this to develop as much as we would like. It would be nice if we could get this going to help your event (if needed), but because so far people have generally been doing avit stuff for love not money, its hard to get a lot more human time available to turn the ideas in our minds into reality.

Im sure I will waffle some more ideas at some point when I have time, until then good luck and I hope it becomes a reality for you :)

Thanks elbows...
Happy to say tomorrow we hold our first AVit Mx introductory meeting.
A few of us will get the ball rolling and pass the word around the city and country to ask for help/contribution/advice from video artists, when time is right ill ask for some international submissions on VJC.

The sponsoring will probably have to be a 50%-50% thing(commercial and museum/arts funds) which we will discuss tomorrow.
We already have an excellent indoor venue in mind which is open to these kinds of events.
Any thoughts on anything particular to discuss during a meeting or look into previously?
How many people do you think should be involved in its planning?
How would you go about dividing responsabilities and duties?
Interesting themes for conferences or workshops?
Should AVit Mx have a specific theme?
Who would i talk to, so as to publish it on Avit website (do i need any licensing/rights to hold and advertise AVit?)

Sorry for bombarding you with q?s but i really want this to work out well, and this is the best (and pretty much only) place to ask.

I?ll be patient, and will keep you posted on how it goes...thanks again for ANY advice or ides.

:help: :yep:

I think a good place to start, is to not make the same mistakes as have been made in previous AVits, which mean's reviewing all the past Avit's thread's, and taking note of what the mistakes made were, and then simply not repeating them...

Other than that, I would say that creating an overall theme would be of great potential..

When/If you have firm plans with specific timescale (a Month or something) in mind PM me and I will set up a AVIT forum for Mexico.

AVIT is what you want to make it. Maybe you want to have more of a party atmosphere in a club environment a showcase as it where of visuals from around the world or be more educational based with demo/workshops from developers around the world.

Study what has happened in the past from the other AVIT?s. There is loads of info there the are heaps of threads and feedback.

I imagine Mexico is more like South America from the sponsorship point of view (references in your profile to drink sponsored events you did) now is the time to try and get in with these people maybe a joint venture with a big club night/tour.

Funny I just had a friend of mine that lived in Mexico City offer me a show around =]

I can help you out by getting you some documents of things we've done in the past. Are you on any chats like aim or msn...
I am vjnixmix@hotmail.com on MSN and aim I am misnix - feel free to add me and I can talk more to you about anything I know that might help.

I run the AVIT North America site if you want to use it at all - even though you would be considering Central America? I think we can push the envelope a bit =] In america the AVIT events have been filtered through an individuals business account as far as taxes and licesing - not sure how that would work relatively. We organized AVIT North America events with a rather small network its more about the support from the community on that actual event date that will matter most IMO. Plan on busting your booty!
Message me sometime and I'll work on getting you access to some documents.

Thanks.

I have tried to contact this Psychoptik guy to no avail.

AVIT MX is pretty damn dead unless someone decides to start it up again.

If someone does, get in contact with me. I currently organize the only latinamerican "cell" of AVIT, here in Buenos iares, and we surely are looking to promote creation of new instances of it in other latinamerican countries.

Cheers!
