View Full Version : VJ Tshirts Contest

I've opened a VJCentral store at CafePress with the intention to sell tshirts, mugs, mousepads, wall clocks and other stuff for VJs. You can see it here (cafeshops.com/cp/store.aspx?s=vjcentral.0) with some sample items. All the money made through the store would go to some kind of community fund which will be used for whatever is needed. The benefits and the way the money is used will be kept public and open for discussion.
What I need now is some good submissions for the design, which is why I start this contest. :) Come on, I know there is a lot of designers here. I need creative ideas for tshirts (or mouse pads, or wall clocks, etc, see the store above) that VJs will want to have. An obvious example is this "I AM NOT THE DJ" tshirt people have been talking about for some time ;)
If you want, you may include the VJCentral logo; I have put it in 2 different format on the URLs below. You're also able not to use any VJC logo or create your own (heck you might come up with something better than my design!) Anything which is related to VJing is fine, the more creative the better.
http://www.vjcentral.com/_images/vjcentral_logo.psd (Photoshop)
http://www.vjcentral.com/_images/vjcentral_logo.png (Fireworks)
Please send all your submissions to exhale@vjcentral.com until the 26th September 2002. Although CafePress only takes JPEGs and GIFs, I prefer the original image format, so feel free to send me files in Photoshop (6 or earlier), Illustrator (9) or Fireworks (MX) format. The background color has to be white (CafePress limit). Tshirts have a front and back image, so you can send 2 images. Each participants can submit as much original design as s/he wants.
*ALL* submissions will make it in the VJCentral store, as long as they follow the guidelines above. In a few months you may meet a VJ with a tshirt that has your own design! The best design/idea will be chosen either by me or through a poll and the person who made this design will receive a FREE tshirt paid by me ;)
Question? Problem? Email me or post here.
PS: You can also post previews of your submission on this thread so others can have ideas and comment.

Hmmm well I'll extend the deadline if I don't get enough submissions.
How much more time do you need?

Hmm I was hoping to have this ready for AVIT but ok, someone else asked me for a deadline extension, so I'll extend it to the Monday 30th September 2002 at midnight GMT. Hope it's enough.

Having just read this post, I thought I'd put up a quick design.

Nice one Nick :)
Regarding your email, JPEG is fine, no worry. However I just did some tests with CafePress and I'd like to add that for JPEG/GIF (and any other non-vector-based format), the images should be at least 1000-pixel large/high. Otherwise the resolution is too small for printing and the image has to be scalled down. Sorry for not making this clear earlier.

Right you are then, I'll re-do it at 1000pixel over the weekend, along with some other bits and pieces.

Hmmmm just back from a big one out socializing so feel free to disregard, but I think that design is a little to old skool oils type thing for VJC (I know I haven't done anything better yet), just an observation........

No problem Morph, that design was a 10-minute quicky to get the ball rolling. Just to really p!ss people off maybe the next one should have fractals :D

I can understand that you might not want to do the design for that t-shirt Irena, but someone has too, I'll throw one down tomorrow if I have the time as it MUST BE MADE.

charlielangridge: RGB is better, since I have to submit JPEG/GIFs to CafePress. Regarding your idea, nice but the background has to be white.

hmmmm why does the backgound have to be white X???
can we get our designed printed on any colour t-shirt or do they have to be WHITE..... if it has to be white I'll wait till we get another colour cause I CAN'T keep a white shirt clean... EVA!!!

it's a limitation with cafepress, as i mentionned already. i don't really think we have the budget to start manufacturing our own tshirts so we'll have to deal with this.
MoRpH
28th September 2002, 10:47 AM
OK so we can only get WHITE t-shirts from cafe-express????
eXhale
28th September 2002, 11:36 AM
that's what i said on the first post. if someone has a better suggestion than cafepress let me know. in the meanwhile i've previewed some very good design with a white background.

(yes I know, shame on me), so you'll have to explain...:(

charlielangridge: hey that one is really nice, but since it has to be white background, maybe you can make the negative, but not to show the details of the bodies, only sillouetes or outlines or something?

OK so Irena has won the contest and will receive a free Tshirt because she was the only one who submitted something and she made 5 great design, as shown below (sorry it's long):
http://www.vjcentral.com/_images/1preview.jpg
http://www.vjcentral.com/_images/2preview.jpg
http://www.vjcentral.com/_images/3preview.jpg
http://www.vjcentral.com/_images/4preview.jpg
http://www.vjcentral.com/_images/5preview.jpg
I personnaly want a few of them! You can still submit your Tshirt design if you want, although there will be no free Tshirt for the people who missed the deadline ;)
Now I have to figure out how to print these Tshirts. I found out that the basic stores of CafePress only allows to have one design per item so we would have to select among the 5 design above. The premium stores allow more than this but they cost $7/month (maximum). However comparing the prices with custom-printed Tshirts, I'll take much less financial risks by using the CafePress premium stores (otherwise I'd have to invest $500 or so with no guarantee to get my money back and no intention to make profits either) so I think I'll do that. If you have other suggestion for Tshirts printing (keep in mind that there would be 5 designs and several sizes), let me know.

Yep some nice designs there and 1 or 2 I wouldn't mind.
I think we should spring for the premuim store as I'msure more designs will come in over time (I know I have some ideas, just no time @ the mo).
Maybe we can use some of the money raised from the donate button after AVIT is done??? I think we should keep that button that way ppl that have some spare cash and no time to write can contribute to the site in another way.

Yeah I'll keep the donation page but improve it to automatically count how much money there is on the community fund. We'll always find some use for the money.

Good job.you can still submit, you just won't win a free tshirt ;) seriously if i go with the premium shops of cafepress, there will be no problem to add different designs over time.

Alright for some reason the t-shirt thing was on my mind so in the last 15 mins ive came up with 16 new sayings and going to start working on some of the designs imedititly sence the contest is over and theres no reson for compition :( i will put the sayings up hear and maybe you could say witch ones you like or if you have an ideal for them. If anything get an ideal of your own. So here they are
1. Dj ? What Dj? ( with a vj kicking a dj in the butt)
2. I'm the DJ for the Deaf!
3.Man I look good! I must be a VJ!
4. I feel naked without my visuals!
5. Look at my HARDWARE!
6.What DJ?( with a hypnitize sign)
7. I make an ugly world Pretty! Who am I? I'm The VJ!
8. I would rather be deaf then blind!
9.I only look as good as my visuals
or You only look as good as your Visuals
10. 1-D 2-D 3-D I make it happen!
11. I make this look good!
12.Does this Keyboard/ monitor look like a turntable?~!
13.The DJ said i could take his cut!
14. VJ Adding another sence to your Experience!
15. VJ Cental Built by VJs for VJs not for DJs!
That it so far! Of course all of then would have Vj cental on them somewhere. If any of you want to make designs for this go right ahead.
Peace I'm out
P.S> Tell me what you think.
