I'm thinking about getting one of these as a playback deck.
What I'm wondering about is this whole "USB Streaming" feature.
Anybody have one of these?
I'm curious if the USB works like a standard WDM type device, or if it is some messed up Sony proprietary thing.
It would be great if I could just hook the bugger in USB and skip using a capture device to get a feed into a visuals program.
I'm fed up that most of the new DV cameras load from the bottom, making them pretty ungainly for switching tapes with. I might just try and get a PC100 off ebay, since I'm pretty happy with how the one I have works, and it bottom loads.

So,
I got my little "video walkman". Sony GV DV1000. They're way cheaper than the previous generation had been.
The USB streaming is fairly useless, as I sort of suspected. But, for stills, the interface is much better than the options I've had with just a memory stick reader that I got with my old camera.
The deck itself is decent; Nice little LCD, and a variety of buttons that are much more "reachable" than they are on any of the equivalent Sony cameras-- especially the damn touchscreen ones. Especially nice are 2x playback, and a slow motion with the touch of a button, either direction. Seems to rewind faster than my camera(pc100), and the transport for the tape is pretty solid. I picked up a SIMA DV rewinder/fast forwarder and it is faster, however.
The reason I'm posting this here, instead of just doing a review (which I will break down and do at some point) is that I wanted to point out that the link I sent, and AAACamera.com are behaving questionably.
They accepted by credit card and put the money through for the original amount of the purchase. $1033 something. Then they send me an e-mail saying to call them. I call them, and the guy says that the price I was quoted was for a "non-US" model and that the fully-US-Waranteed model will cost me an extra $50 or so. Well, being beligerent but not very bright, I told him that I wanted the original price model. I was sort of calling his bluff. He grudgingly agreed to send me the "grey-market"(not his terms) version for the original price.
I received the deck, and it is the fully warranteed US version (what I really should have) and a receipt for the more expensive price. Now, my initial reaction was to get incredibly angry and call my credit card to see what was going on. No extra charge, however. So, I'm thinking I probably did succeed in calling the bluff, and they were forced to send me what they had for the original price I was charged. Perhaps a small victory? Still waiting to figure out.
Why I'm an idiot:
There are a plenty of companies selling equipment out there. They all get the equipment at roughly the same cost. You can always get a piece of equipment for somewhere not too far above that. If someone provides misleading advertising or information, you need to stop right there. Don't give them business. The more people that can go beyond saying no to the hustle (which I did) and take the further step to say no to dealing with this sort of company at all, the better off we'll all be.
One of the keys to self-defense is to make the decision that you are going to hurt a person attacking you before you get attacked. That way, when it happens, you don't waste time thinking about the moral implications of your actions, you just act. I'd say the same advice goes for shifty retailers. Kick 'em in the yarbles and run. Don't deal with them, just cancel your order.
Make that decision now, before you end up on the phone.
