The AVIT UK organising committee has decided to make a change in the way that VJ software workshops a run this year.
For reasons that I will give in a moment, we have decided that instead of having workshops on individual VJ Softwares, AVIT UK 2004 will be looking to offer outcome based software workshops. We have come up with a few ideas, and would like to hear more from the community, as well as offers to give part of a workshop.
The reasons why we have decided to do this are because an attempt to offer workshops on all the VJ softwares available, or even just the most popular and entirely new softwares, would easily fill the whole timetable. Workshops on individual pieces of software are best suited for the experienced user wanting to take their use to the next level.
From what we saw and heard last year the VJ software workshops were attended by many people who did not use, or had only a small amount of experience in using the software concerned.
In the case of inexperienced users, who are often looking around at software to perform particular tasks (search through VJF and you will find many people asking questions about software to do particular jobs, whether mixing layers or reacting to audio), workshops based on outcome, that would answers these questions directly will be best.
In addition to this we will be asking developers to present and demonstrate their software, as well as making themselves available to talk to users at the trade show.

To offer workshops explicitly aimed at experienced users alongside these workshops would take up more time and space then we could justify this year. We feel that people who have a good knowledge of their tools are as well served by workshops on the more artistic side of things, gaining inspiration rather then technical knowledge and by attending workshops concerning areas that they have not yet explored.

The idea for the structure of each workshop would be a panel of people, talking about one or more softwares that perform the task, how it performs it and its weaknesses and strengths.
This will allow attendees to compare different softwares and find which one fits their needs. It will also serve as a mechanism for experienced users to ask questions about a particular area of a softwares functioning.
The ideas for workshops that have been raised for the AVIT UK organising committee are:

"i want my visuals to automatically respond to the beat of the music" - audio responsive - eg: looking at AVS / Milkdrop / R4 + Flowmotion + VisualJockey + VDMX
"i want to playback my clips" - clip triggering - resolume + VJamm + midivid + arkaos
"i want to mix 2 streams / leave the mixer at home" - virtual mixers - resolume + VDMX + motiondive
"i want realtime effects chaining and mashups" - fx based - visualjockey + isodora
"I want to play audio and video from the same computer" - Audio-Visual - VJamm + Midivid + Arkaos
"I want to use flash movies in my visuals" - Flash

the list of softwares included after these are by no means complete (as you can probably guess from the flash workshop). As you can probably tell these ideas came mostly from PC users, so please add softwares that you think fit workshops that have already been mentioned.
Please also let us know which ones you might be interested in, so we can programme accordingly, and of course any feedback you have on the decision, or questions that arise will be gratefully recieved.
