There are definately a few people coming up from London with kit. It'd be cheaper and infinitely more fun if we hire a transit or even better slick people carrier and go en mass. So what are the numbers? Hands up, ladies and gentlemen...

Anyone who hasn't been to the uk before should know that :-

gatwick is not IN london (its a half hour train ride to central london)

heathrow is not in london (although it has a tube station - its quite a long tube ride to anywhere sensible)

luton really isn't in london at all (?hour on the train?)

stanstead is really far from london too (terrible train ride)

so watch out -it can be bad to arrive in the middle of the night (gatwick and heathrow are the best airports with 24hour public transport)

spark
9th September 2002, 09:39 PM
addendum to that:

if ppl are meeting at mine for the minibus idea, which probably will leave either 9am saturday or midday friday, then heathrow/gatwick/luton are the best airports, all one train line away. gatwick+luton are on thameslink (rail), heathrow is on piccadilly line (metro), both have stations near me.

just like to ad that it would be a beter idea all round to get there for friday night otherwise you guys are going to be fu***d by the end of the night, saterday!

spark
9th September 2002, 09:56 PM
totally, oh i've thought about that!

depending on numbers, the answer is that there will probably be cars/minibus on both. the problem with friday is the traffic...

What's the maximum number of place you can have in UK to drive a minibus without a bus driving license?

unjulation
10th September 2002, 11:06 AM
as far as i'm aware then you can hire a 15 seater without a psv (public sevice lisance)

Don't know if it'll be any use, but me and SyZyGy will be driving up to Leeds from london on Sat. morn, and then going back to Birmingham on the Sunday.
I've got some space in my car for some ppl and equipment, so if anyone else happens to be making a trip on that route then their welcome to join us.
Otherwise, if you're going up on saturday we might look to join the convoy. :)

coming in london (no air ticket yet) but and would as well like to join the bandwagon (been to the UK once and don't know the way outside trafalgar square haha) uhm if you guys post a date and time then let me know and I'll buy a ticket accordingly

Primebase3

addendum: our collective is 6/7 men strong (not 100% sure if all are coming) is that a prob. if so are there other solutions to get to leeds (in time) ? so many questions and so little time :)

really? at least there's the stansted

can't be worse than the 1h45m busride

tom didnt really clarify this, if you do get a choice of airports...

Heathrow is the closest to london,
stanstead is the next closest, tho more arse to get to than gatwick
gatwick is the next closest, tho easier to get to/from than stanstead
luton is not near london at all and should be avoided if at all possible

and if your arriving at the london city airport your in a private learjet/helicopter so you can fuck off and have a lackey sort out yr travel plans

Luton airport might not be so bad if you want to go directly to Leeds, but I don't know what the train links are like.

Remember that Leeds has an airport as well, as does Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham, all of which are not too bad for getting to Leeds by train or coach.

Personally, If there is not a convoy going up, then I would suggest looking at the cheapest flight, and asking me to get you the information for your travel from that point, as it will be easy for me to get this to you.

I have no idea where your local airport will take you, but for London airports Heathrow and Gatwick are probably the best to take you into central London as Heathrow is on the underground and Gatwick has excellent rail links.
I've never used Stanstead, but Luton is north of London and closer to Leeds.

Hope you can make it across and join a convoy, but if not let me know and I'll get you travel info for once you get to the UK.

leeds airport can be interesting for ppl flying directly from amsterdam, or ppl flying via ryanair and willing to pay extra
for an connecting flight from glasgow to leeds airport.

Scratch Luton as an idea, you'll have to come back into London to get to Leeds.

Heathrow will probably involve an hour long tube ride to get to Kings Cross train station (I thought you'd be able to go from Euston, but apparently not, sorry).

Leeds and Bradford international airport has a half-hourly bus to the centre of Leeds.

If you book the train tickets 7 days in advance, although you have to specify which trains you will be taking, then you can get a ticket from Kings Cross for ?25UK, and the tube I think costs ?2 or ?3 UK. When I asked they said the train ticket on the day will cost ?63.30.
Tickets from Gatwick are ?47UK 7 days in advance, or ?70.50 on the day.
(These are for return tickets)
Couldn' find out about the cost of the Leeds bus, as no-one answered the phone:( But I'll endeavour to find out more if you decide to go directly to Leeds. I don't think it'll cost alot.

Hope this helps more than it confuses :)

For those who don't know there is a loop hole in a cheap ticket through the tunnel.
I and many others used this method last year.
......Ah looks like the same pricing is still in operation.

http://www3.eurotunnel.com
This is from UK ports
There should be a French version of this

Late Afternoon** Mon - Sat
Outward > 15.00 Inward < 01.00 next day
?29
Evening** Mon - Sat
Outward > 18.00 Inward < 02.00 next day 1 day
?19
Basically, you do not have to book online. We paid the day before at a local travel agent (+?10 fee) and with a packed car took the 19.00 train and where supposed to return before 2am the following morning.
We didn't , just got the boat back for ?96 a month later.

Hope this is helpful...it is a good scam

ok as u all know us aviteers are runnin around like blu arsed flies trying to put all of this together. but there's only so much each of us can do.
we need an extra hand to volounteer to coordinate the travel from london, both for a number of london guys and for the european's flying in to various london airports.
now obviously the best way to go about this is to hire a minibus, cos it'll be loads cheaper than individual rail/coach tickets.
Its quite a handful, but trust me it's a dodle compared to some of the jobs weve got .
anyone up for the challenge pm me
cheers on behalf of all the avit organisers:heart:

love to help. even have a suggestion on the matter : 2 travel plans from london/Harwich to leeds : car and train

and 2 times two meet on in leeds : 1 for fridaynight and another 1 for saturdaymorning ?

bigup to the avit crew indeed: they're the cats putting it up and organising is a B**** with 6 people but with the quantity which it is now it's damn near impossible: well nuthin is impossible :D

Has anybody got any spare seats for transport from London (or the South East) to avit? I would be gratefull if this is possible, because, as per usual public transport is crap and expensive where as a contribution of petol money etc is generally more comftable and cheaper! (Im savin for some new toys - i'm not a tight bastard honestly!!!!!)

ok, we'll be 2 and a flyght-case (our computer).
we didn't know which hour we arrive in london, but if we know precisely the departure hour of the bus we will manage to be in time.
what is the departure hour ?

there is no bus time yet because no-one has stepped forward to help organise one yet.
i repeat again avit needs someone to volounteer to help with coordinating the transport of the foreign vjs from the various london airports, please will someone in the uk step forward to take this one task, because we cannot do everything, and are already overworked with the things we have now
we are all giving up massive amounts of our time to make this community event happen but we can only stretch ourselves so thin...
please pm me if you can do this.

hi,

is anybody driving up on saturday from london? we've got something on friday night and can' t cancel. Spaces for two would be fantastic.

i've been away for a couple of weeks & the last i thought is that there would be a coach/mini bus of some sort happening. is this not the case?

thanks in advance

there certainly are cars; the bus while obvious turned inpractical as londoners needed to leave at completely different times, whereas who would have thought it brighton have got a full-on tourbus of all things! rock on!

just to check, email me with how many there are of you, how much kit, etc and i'll see what we can coordinate.
