Hi Niky!!!
;^)

Thanx for your kind words re: VMP. It was a huge struggle, but now things can start rolling. We've already got a few things in the woods that could be pretty eye-popping. Now we only need the artists who have the heart and soul and courage and vision. One of these days, I expect the Wisconsin Whiz to be doin her stuff with us. When the right dish comes along, I personally will serve it up to you.
;^)

Now that the wiki is up, I can start considering the rest of life. As regards AVIT SF, I'm all yours in whatever you and the Pixyman and whoever else wants me to do. Panels, a VMP workshop, live show (also could do that thing that Pixy was talking about re: the video only with a DJ for an AV thing. I could get into that.)

I'll write you an email tomorrow. We can talk easier that way.
Would love to see what you're doing. You know what I feel about your stuff (well....almost all of your stuff....
hee hee...)
;^)

Big big kiss
SMACKEROO!!!!!!

Hi Niki,

I'd be potentially interested in doing a upgraded version of the workshop
I did at AVIT UK 2003 (new improved VJ storyboarding)

personaly, I'd be really interested in learning about 360 multi screen projections...

cheers, Ne1

i'd love to come and really teach a 2 hour thing this time- i'd come with a bare bones vj patch written in jitter and i'd develop it over 2 hours in front of the group- people would have an app to take home after the session.

the v4 (myself [joshua goldberg], giles hendrix [http://gesture.org], dan vatsky [skyvat] and chris jordan [seeJ/cjaxx]) are putting in a bid to perform. if we're accepted, i'll DEFINITELY do this.

if ??? saccade! (Mr Dervish) your modesty is nice.. i heard about this from Dan! man i look forward to seing your combo!

Nix if you're doing panel discussions im totally down for doing some of those, like in UK future/art.... if its only education i think i could maybe offer cultivation skills for archival images and media junksmithinig... something like that..

Hi Nik!

Just posted this on another thread here (boyz v. girlz), but if you're talking about education, boyz v. girlz is all about education.
;^)

"I really like the idea of an all girlz night at every AVIT event (and elsewhere as well). It keeps the boyz testosterone completely out of it (i.e. gender competition) and forces them to look at a completely different perspective for an entire night. A totally different and very healthy experience for the male gender IMHO. Also, it?s a great inspiration for generating incentive to get more females into the scene, and into stronger positions within the scene. In addition, I would suggest a panel discussion the day after the event, with the previous night?s performers on the panel, to talk about what happened and the differences in performance approaches."

Here's a potentially provocative idea to throw to the table, and it can be freely ignored by anyone.

On a personal and artistic basis, I am *not* a fan of all-girl or all-boy performance nights.

I think these types of events really only serve to highlight differences between genders and don't ultimately contribute to any type of increased participation by an underrepresented gender. If men and women are truly equals (and I believe they are), we should be able to conduct our events in fully integrated manners. If particular gender themes want to be explored, a female performer should feel free to explore issues of what it is like to be a woman, while a male performer could do the opposite and equivalent.

I just find these gender isolations too superficial sometimes.

I agree, sometimes.
I also agree, sometimes not.
I'm talking about the "sometimes not".

For more on this, try
VJForums.com > AVIT Events > Birmingham, UK (Nov 2004) > boyz vs girlz...vj battle ?
You'll find lots of support for your position there.
And, as usual, I'm in the minority.

Good - I am glad to see some activity on this thread.

Peter - The concept you present is definately unique - although we simply don't have time to have a girls-only performance. Out of curiousity it makes me wonder though if we would even have that great of a turnout if we did.

Saccade - That's a great idea to do something a bit more planned out this year... lets just hope those boys from Colorado don't take you out the night before ... heheh :P

Keep the suggestions coming....

Nix I'd be willing to teach 3ds max basic modelling, animation, and texturing with the VJ in mind.

I'm also willing to teach After Effects also.

I'd like to learn more about midi triggering of audio and visual loops in sync... intergration of software like Ableton live for audio loops with vj softs.

Lucidhouse raises a good point.

How about a discussion on how to interface MIDI sequencing hardware (e.g. Yamaha RM1x, Roland MC-909) with VJ software for audio-visual performance?

Out of curiousity it makes me wonder though if we would even have that great of a turnout if we did.

Precisely why I suggested it. The result could answer a whole lotta questions about a whole lotta questions. And raise a whole bunch more. And as you well know, I'm more interested in these real life questions than in meaningless design.

Having said that, I understand your financial and scheduling needs, so take this as just another contribution to a variety of ongoing related VJF discussions.

Do whatever you can, and have fun doing it!

i'll stay far far away from jason/pixy/doug the night before my demo, i promise.

back, foul coloradans! back, alcohol-wielding beasts of distraction!

more seriously: in two hours i can build in front of an audience a basic structure that uses MIDI to trigger and play a folder of clips. control knobs can be used to set in/out points and basic mixing will also be covered...

it will be a wild ride, but everyone will walk out with a fully functional jitter patch if i have two hours.

Sounds good Josh - lets be in touch.

Now for Midi... great suggestions. Is there someone planning to come or that has applied to perform that would like to teach something on MIDI? Or a panel to host a discussion??

Disassembler -- thank you for the offer... I will be in touch with you as well. I may be getting Doug (from Colorado) to do after effects -- but your other suggesti will work out nice. I'll be in touch :)

and we shall all be educated!

Thanks for all the suggestions... we still have a lot more space to fill - so keep em coming.

I'd recommend talking to the Robotspeak guys in the lower Haight. They came out and did a similar demo last year for us.

Actually - I think a really good idea would be to have someone from BAVC come out and give a demo on MIDI for Logic 6.

Grant was saying Logic is an excellent sequencer that can also handle video....

This was actually Bishop's idea, but I like it so I'll go ahead and post it.

An educational session devoted to developing hardware and software.

You take people experienced in developing video products, sit them down and grill them on what it takes to develop it, bring it to market, and everything inbetween.

This could be cool for the people looking to go beyond a new Max patch but aren't satisfied waiting for the big boys to release something new.

Bishop mentioned getting Vidvox and EJ Enterprises to present, maybe throw Peter Rubin or Jilt in there too or the Pilgrim, VJockey, Camart (VJam), or Vlight guys. Or what about Jay with the Viditar? Not sure who's gonna actually make it out to San Fran, but I would love to see how a session like this unfolds...

We could call it Roll Your Own or maybe Homebrew - Creating your own video tools. Get two hardware and two software people, give them each ten minutes then open it up to a panel type deal.

Also, is there a stipend for people presenting in the educational sessions?

I sure would like to see developers there also.
