hey,
just got a inspiron 8200 with geforce440go 64mbddr and its rubbish for video. i have four questions, then maybne i send it back.
1.when using video out the max resoslution of the tv is 1024*768, is this standard or does the radeon 7500 for mobiles do better than this?
2.the tv out has black borders that are fairly thin but non-removeable. does radeon do this?
3.these borders wobble, or distort a little when high contrast stuff is placed near them (like a menu or bright video with dark bits) thus stretching the entire signal a bit, i could probably live with this but it would be nice if it didn't, again does the radeon do this?
4.does the radwo have s-video out.
do other people who use this video card esperience these same problems?
anyhow i'm fukkin pissed off and am very close to sending it back, the only thing that will stop me is if other laptop video cards are equally crap.
also the hard drive seems to stutter on video playback, this fukks resolume and vjamm, it seems ok on vjammpro2 and windows media player but i think these load clips straight to ram. the drive is the new ibm travelstar gh 60gig thing which is 5400 and should be blinding....
any help would be massively appreciated as i probably don't have that much time to send it back.
cheers,
chris/ snapdragon

Did you try out TV tool?
TV-TOOL (http://tvtool.info/)

the tv encoder on my card is nv17 which is not supported by tv tool unfortunetley, i also wonder if all geforce 4 440go's have this encoder or if it varies.

snap - I have the 8200 with the gf4 440go as well. The black border is there for me too, though I've been using scan converters forever, I've never heard of a laptop video card that had a decent TV-out. (though this is better than most I've seen, and I'd use it if the scan converter broke or I forgot it)
Are you using 2000 or XP? I haven't even tried it with this machine, but on my partner's 8000, resolume worked like ass under XP, so we're both running 2000. Resolume runs like an absolute dream for me under 2000 with the 40GB 5400rpm HD from toshiba, though the drive is having some problems and Dell is replacing it with the 60GB 5400rpm one, which I'm assuming will be the IBM you're referring to.
the 7500 is going to be slower speed-wise, but I've no idea how the video output is. I think this guy I had a couple classes with has one, so I'll bug him to test it out.

cheers murph, i'm still on xp, i've seen resolume run fine on xp and the developers say it runs fine, so i think its my hard drive, the ibm 60gig one thats screwed, just about to try tesxting a radeon of a friends sony, i'll let you know if i get anywhere.

Guys,
if that can reassure you,
I'm running visual jockey, motionDive and resolume
on my dell 8200 geForce440 64mb vidRam, 256 ram, 40gb HD
its running like a charm, vids never played so fast,
some jiddering as you mentionned on very short clips...
(although my guess is that it's a compression issue,
I hate cinepac)
yes, I do get the black frame as you do with most pc tv outs,
I went through all the tabs and could not find
an overscan setting like you get on G4 laptops...
(if someone finds it, please tell me)
luckilly I didnt trow out my scan-con...
I've just recently started going back to director,
because I tryed its 3D features from that laptop,
and basically it works realtime...
I admid I almost went for a G4 laptop,
but I'm not really happy
with the Mac specific software (isadora, arkaos, motionDive)
so the Dell 8200 for me, isn't the ideal situation,
but its the least worst off

wait...so the new 440 video chipset in the new Dells (and Toshibas) don't do zoomed output yet? maybe I'm mis-reading...

no, no zoomed output. IIRC it was just a huge pain in the ass for everybody who tried to use it with the matrox cards anyway, why would you want to bother? Until softscan is released, I don't think scan converters are going anywhere, PC or laptop.
and snap - maybe you don't have bus mastering turned on on your HD? I wish I knew the difference between our setups and Anyone's, but I don't really care, 2000 works great for me. =]

i'm sending it back. customer support are anightmare, technical support are a headache, unfortunetely the hard disk passes their diagnostics so they don't believe theres anything wrong with it, playback is also rubbish in the original vjamm, playback of the same video clips on my girlfriends dell latitude 266 is fine!
my advise to people is never buy dell, they are a massive headache, i've spent about 4 hours on the phone to tech support in india/northern ireland and dublin, people never ring back - i mean i can understand it, if i was doing their telesales/ telesupport job i would be much ruder etc. i can hardly think straight anymore!
know the nightmare of selecting another machine soon begins.
