Hello!
Our competitor As of a few months ago-- is a renounced VJ that popped back in the scene--
Problem-- he does all of his gigs for free-
Even though he is not a amature -
Even though he supplies all of the needed equipment (projector, screen ect...)
Even though he is pretty good at what he does and he spends mounds of time and energy on his set
So we had planned on addressing him with our concern, but low and behold before the chance to do so arrived-- a nose had been turned up at us -and concerns would not be listened to
So here we are-- our main line of business seems to be stepped on and degraded to "freebies"
Suggestions???

to be honest there's not a ;lot you can to about it save be better then him and therefore hopefully get the work by reputation alone - tho if a man is doing it for free even with the projectors etc i reckon its going to be a bit of a slog up hill, mind there must be one night happaning at any given time at the moment it sounds like your going to have to lern to get along in the same space for surley your not sergesting that he has a total monopaly on all the nights in your area?

..another possible solution; go borg! i think if you find even one promoter who you like, strike up some sort of project with him/her. ideally if you build up a strong relationship as well as a nice rep for good vibe parties, it wont matter what the other VJ is doing.... all you have to do is get more involved in the other aspects of putting on a show (which kinda sucks, i mean who has teh time-- not to mention added pressure) cause the more input you have to the overall experience, the more firmly rooted your ties will be...
that of just kick him (bad VJ) in the balls! well, no dont do that, he might press charges and besides someone who is unhappy and also doing it for free will likely frind a new hobby/fixation soon and leave teh scene completely. just a hunch, but good luck

I say meet up with him and see if you can assimilate him into your crew. You'd have more gear, and extra member, and the result would be that the whole gang would get paid. Explain your situaation and team up, and maybe some of his freebie mentality will spread to your collaborations.
Seems like you already respect his methods enough, so maybe you can team up on something. Starting battles isn't going to get you business.

he may be doing a good thing for you
He's generating a market for VJs. He can't be at two clubs/venues at the same time. It's only a matter of time before competing clubs say "we want a VJ".

this is how free market capitalism works - unfortunatly there is little you can do about it without revolutionary shake up of the so called "free world"

yes and it would be strange to pulll down capitalism cos you want fee paying job and make money from art...
however on the original point it is unlikely that your nemesis will be around for that long, whilst vjing is fun we all like to be paid for those long nights, he'll probably re-retire soon or start asking for money
