View Full Version : Courtyard installations? (and some pics of the venue)

One of the features of the Custard Factory is a big courtyard with a pool in it.
See these pictures for some views of it (http://www.syzygy-visuals.co.uk/avit/cfpics.html)
(The tail that you can see in a couple of the pictures is of a big metal dragon that sits halfway up one of the walls of the courtyard)
What ideas does everyone have for what AVIT could do with this space? I'm imagining some sort of hanging video installation, but if anyone has any more specific ideas that could use a space of this size, I'd love to hear them...

little floating boats, on each one either a projector or a screen (sail)

i really love the windows in the second and third pictures - are they the artist studios?
it could be fantastic to create a video matrix accross the windows all back projected from within the rooms.
Is that anywhere near possible?

wow thats a great idea paul
if we can gain access to the rooms then its pretty easy to achive - so long as they don't mind us running shit loads of cables all over the place :)

also is there roof access? - can we run rope accross from one side to the other to hang stuff in the middle?

i also really like the tall vertical white wall space in the 4th/5th images.
i can imagine some really nice loop installation going on there.
i remeber a video installation in newyork, cant remember who by, but it was basically people leaping in the air, this was projected on a tall vertical towerblock so it looks like the people are leaping for the sky, but anyway the shape of that space reminds me of it. and having the sky above is something i just like the feel of.
imagine for example playing tetris on a 50ft vertical space in a courtyard where the blocks fall from the sky.
or a guy climbing a ladder to the heavens continually.
i`m sure theres some potential in that wall.

Some of the windows are directly into studios, some of them are corridors (most studios I think)
Doing anything inside them would rely on getting the people who own the sudios on board. Given the sort of people who have studios here i would be confident of getting at least some of them to go for it.

There is definitely roof access - events have had fireworks fired from up on the roof in the past.
Never seen anyone hang things of cables from the roof but I imagine it would be possible (I'll check with CFDave next time we meet him)

its a nice building.
but the street looks odd.
very artificial interpretation of a new old street.
idea with matrix is cool.
should combine it with slides too.
i remeber tate gallery (old, not modern tate),
they put slide of drawn building on it.
I liked that, of its simplisity.
maybe another idea could be
putting 3 different coloured lights somewhere and make BIG shadows on the walls from the pple (or trees).. outside (walking/dancing/whatever)..

what about projecting on the pool ?
(the 1st picture)
its might b kind of kitsch / glam but a challenge too..
can b nice having 2 layers, under robotfunk's little projector boats...

I like that idea! Having different projectors in different directions would mean the sails would catch different projections depending on where they were and what angle they were at.
Tom has pointed out that we'd need some way to stop the boats clustering around the edge of the pool. I guess they could be anchored (with some freedom of movement) or radio controlled...

I remember someone mentioning projections where fish were projected into a pool and they looked remarkably lifelike.
I wonder if gauze could be used underwater to create layers at different depths...

It is quite surreal...
To add to the effect, the thing that you can't quite see that looks like a tree poking out from behind a building is actually this:

this was at the big chill a few years ago, , if you could project onto the pool so as to make it look like its things in the pool would be fantastic to have some kind of fantasy underwater kingdom thing going on, with CG mermaids swimming around and shit like that

get a selection of 3m+ diameter inflated white weather balloons floating JUST above the water by suspending them/floating them etc
then project at night with a wopping varilte/gobos etc etc etc from 2 or 3 angles.

how about shaping the water of the pool into
a sculpture that would provide the surface for projections ?
