I have been asigned to design a 360 degree video projection show for the interior of huge dome. I was wondering if you know of anyone who has tackled this with minimal distortion and which projectors they used. thanx!

Could you tell me the name of the people planning to use the Dome Pojection System? And if you know, the what type of dome structure they are planning to use? Are you going to be able to sync up all the computers?

Get in touch with Johnny Dekam, dekam@vidvox.net, he's working on putting together a full dome system for a local planetarium, he may have some advice.

One of my last projects, Ars_Natura, is an interactive and high-resolution 360 degrees projection system for the Montreal's subway. I have been designing many similar systems in the past with different number of computers, projectors and screens. I have found solutions to all major problems related to such setups and there are many : synchronisation, smart edges, overlap, surface deformation according to the projector's optics and the screen's geometry, custom content creation, etc. I have also worked with the elumenati lenses.
If you need my help as a consultant please send me a PM or an email and I'll give you more details.

sorry i didn't catch this earlier. we've helpded design many configurations for different dome-based systems. we sell optics/projectors as well, and are working with johnny dekam on the hardware side his molecularium project. you can check out our gear at http://www.elumenati.com...

not yet. we'd love to find uk-based partners to make the technology more ubiquitous and help us find different applications.
until now we haven't done a whole lot of club work, mostly custom installations for art/museum exhibition, installation, & performance. luckily the barriers between these fields and clubs are continuing to be torn down. we had some systems in the immersion room at AVIT US last year and had a blast.
hopefully now that dekam and others are starting to use the systems there is starting to be even more of an impetus for the development of vj-friendly software for dome and immersive environments. break the tyranny of the rectangle, i always say...

Are you doing AVIT US this year in San Francisco?
I've just received news that I'm performing there,
with a project called "the Pleasure Dome"
wanna collaborate?

id, have you guys gotten anywhere with the "generic" fisheye lens system you were developing? I'd still love one of your systems but *oof*, I'm not made of money (yet)...
(avit chicago sure was fun, wasn't it? :) )

we've actualy got some interesting prototype stuff working, just not quite ready for prime time. it doesn't have the advantage of being in focus at all points, but at least it cheaply provides immersive projection!
as far as AVIT US this year, we don't have any plans as of yet. unfortunately it's on the same day as http://www.domefest.com in new mexico, so we probably won't have time to make it to sf.
what's the pleasure dome project?

I'm very interested in it even if its not all in focus...for what I have in mind that wouldn't matter much...plus, if you've seen my style of video you'll know I'm on a serious no-fi bent :)

Hmmm interesting idea.
Have done a 360 degree projection onto a cylinder using 6 softedged Barco R14's backprojecting onto the inside of the cylinder. Source was a Watchout server i think if i remember rightly...
It was a real shite to set up but looked fantastic projecting a panaramic view shot from the top of the London Eye. :D

Just done a gig in Leeds at a club called evolution.
It had 16 projectors firing outwards to fill a complete circle edge to edge. wow - it was amazing - will post a vid clip of it when I've captured the footage. The best bit about this was the ability to send images flying round the room from left to right or both.
This sytme has been in the club for a while - anybody else come across this?

This company seem to have nailed the 360 shizzle dizzle.

I have lots more links on my other 'pooter, personally I'm interested in what you can do with just 5 beamers, back projection and a cube, like in videogames.

that is very interesting.
I had no idea they were showing my work on their website.
there is some stratosphere stuff here...
www.deepvisual.com/sphere.html
as for the magic cube, forget it.
I did exactly that for a topshop fashion show in london two years ago and it was dreadful.
thankfully, it wasn't my gig, I was just projectionist.
as a rule of thumb, the audience need to be at least twice as far back as the screen is wide, to be able to watch video. in a cube, they are 0.5 times the width back
its like watching the TV from 6 inches away, you see all the pixels and everything looks blurred. The client was pulling their hair out and it ended in tears.
my guess is it will only really work if you do it in HD.
anyone else have better results??

This is what convinced me that the cube might be a good idea :
http://www.planetjeff.net/ut/CaveUT.html
I can't see that scaling it up a bit would be that difficult, but then again I'm just going from 1 tiny photo on an out of date webpage.
The Stratosphere visuals are great btw!
edit: I'll just throw in this link probably elsewhere on vjf but nice to have it here Dynamic Surround Videohttp://www.washedashore.com/projects/surround/

its all about the content - if you are trying to use the cube idea then you need to have content that works when viewed up close - the pixelization issues can be got round (HD CRT projectors being the best option - 4 edge blended lcds per side of the cube would also be a good aproch) but making content that is designed to be seen on a TV screen simply won't look good - you have to deal with the fact that people are close up and can't see the whole image as one.

absolutely right tom,
any fool can make video nowadays, but making stuff that works in a given situation requires skill and experience.

An open box is also a good model - with appropriate content as always.
