alright, the other thread was getting kind of long, so here's a new one.

briefcasin' it rocks! i love being able to walk in and setup with 2 courier bags and a backpack. screw having to walk around with a cart full of wires and connectors. does anyone know of the CHEAPEST flightcases on the net? i would kind of like to rackmount everything.

I can fit in a suitcase and a backpack/laptop case. Targus makes a very nice backpack which padds a laptop well.. on the average day said case contains, for me, one laptop, DV cam, 2 digital still cams, cords to bring them all together, and miscellaneous other shit.

The dream set up

A mx 50
A dell inspiron 8200 with resolume and scanconverter
A powerbook G4 with after effect, fcp 3.0
A mini DV cam (is also recorder)
A portable DVD player

It would be great...
I'm getting there

depends how much gear you're carrying

I'm using a soft 100 record DJ bag
that I bring on board as carry-on luggage
where I put 2 lappies and an MX12
all that fits in the overhead bin...

the rest (wires and shit) I put in my suitcase
with undies and toothbrush. and voila !

it doesn't matter how big it is, but it's how you use it that counts !

Some1 got experience with the heating problem by building a dj flightcase with 2 comps a mixer, a dvd, 2 15" TFT and the 5"lcd?

We like to build one if we have the money to do that. I guess
it?ll be a heavy rig but you just have to swith it on.

Yeha, I got a system like that an never had any heat problems.
Pentium cpu, so its runs cooler and the chopped up cases are rivetted to the aluminium chassis so there is a good heatsink.
The flightcase parts are readily obtainable and with a good design and stubborn attitude, I reckon its worth it.
Plug and play is still less weight on your mind, and more on the set. I often get "laptop" jibes but they can't output the full pal with live camera, and have enough media storage for 2 x 8 hour sets. Nice to have lots of back up kit, you cannot risk a blank screen.

hey, cool shit...I've been mulling over my gear-transport-situation....trying to decide what stays, what go's and how to pack it...my gear is a bit stranger...but still relatively small...

anyway anyone.....would you say a 100lp case is an efficient use of the commonly alloted carry-on space?
That is, does it fill up the whole space, or can one generally get away with a larger bag?

went off on a case search..don't know if this is "cheap", but its a case for your pride and joy...I think its worth it to get the "good stuff"

be carefull Lev, hard case 100 lp DJ bag are NOT small enough,
the difference is subtle, but the soft one are OK for carry-ons...

you might get away with that model you just showd on your last post,
better cross refence that with the allowed sizes on your choice of airlines...

borrowed a cheaper, but nice hard plastic case from a buddy..everything seems to fit nicely..although not sure if I'll bring the Dr.Groove since I don't think I have an A/V slot @ AVIT and I have NOTHING programmed yet...

my pack includes:
cell phone
ungodly amounts of various wires and cables
two firewire drives
optical mouse
powerbook g4
3 spandex screens

minus projector and video mixer. it holds everything.

when doing a show that i have to fly to on my own , i use a soft carry case that came with an old lc-7000 ekie projector , in it i can pack my ibook , mini dvd player , Sima Video Ed/it 2x Mini Editor , sony dv cam , 300 micro jack scan converter , and cs-10 1000 anci luman projector , also i bring a smaller soft bag that came with one of my sony cs-10 which i pack it in along with wires , two ripstop nylon power fan inflateble screens , and squeeze clothes in were i can , packing the bare minimum of corse . then take the hole lot on as carry-on , as you can take one bigger bag and one smaller bag on most airlines . all the gear i use for those shows i bought because it was small , after busting my ass humping around heavy equipment for years on end . this way you have your hands on the gear with out worrying about the baggage handlers playing smash up , or loose the luggage , with the tools you need to do the work you been flown out to do .
