Hy,

I am starting to write a VJ software from scratch. My aim is to write AtomixMP3 for VJ (www.atomixmp3.com) : everything a DJ could ever want with the best technology.

It will be builded around a 3D engine and will implement all its function thru plugins (I will release the SDK). It will allow video and 3D to be melted together. I already wrote a soft for my own use, based on DirectShow and this new one will be based on DX8 (100% hardware accelerated, GF3 mini).

Now, I would like to know what exactly U want to find in a VJsoft : 2D ? 3D ? particule system ? video ? live video? video loop ? mixed 2D/3D/video ? automatic beat matching ? fullscene effets ? ease of use ? skinnable user interface ? ... It will already include all of these but I might forget things.

answer here or mail me back.

Start with something that combines everything from existing softwares (read vjcentral reviews) then give us a list of whats in it and we can add to that.

Personally I would like to see 1/4 screen output options, thumbnails, PC/midi keyboard triggering, ability to create layouts/FX chains like AJs AVS and VJo (there I said something nice about it to start off the new forums :) ) I would also like to see a dedidcated USB hardware interface for control (maybe a direct hack using the videonics commandpost (mine just arrived in the post yesterday, expect a review on VJcentral soon)....

Hmmmmm what else...... A/V capability would be good, hardwire LPT control (like AJs AVS) would be cool for ppls controller projects. Loads of cool FX that we can design (yeah with a graphical/text SDK). 3d&2d, video loops.... forget that swirl winamp audio generated shit, a beat detect could be good for the truely lazy.

Skinable interfaces suck.... maybe the ability to put you own logo somehwere on the interface would be cool... but a full skin is unessesary.

Oh yeah and an SDK/plugins to control hardware via the serial/parallel port..... EG. MX1, Fairlight CVI, MX50

1 - full skin : you can arrange your template the way you want, hide and show feature you do/don't need and so on.

2 - Hardware support : will include I/O SDK and I'll implement most commun drivers

3 - beat detection : not for the laziest. You don't even have to care about the sync, just about mixing !!!! Just look AtomixMP3 : before, I was just mixing 2 synchronized tracks, synchronizing took a rather important time. Now, I'm playing with loop, filtering, effects and doing much more advanced mixing (back&forth ....). I know finding the sync is really important cos it's part of you "feeling" the track. But if you can avoid this long part, you can just focus on the joy of creation/modification.

thx for you comments

Yeah hide/reveal functions on the UI would be great :)

Beat detection can be useful but personally I found the best beat detection in the human being :) (this discussion was already done to death on the old VJforums).... some were for some were against, same as the composition Vs mixing app discussion.

AWESOME, i'm very intersted what you're coding... i hope you get the 3D section (atleast) fast as demopaja & pd(GEM)...

if you need help on the GUI (fonts, icons, etc...) i would be happy 2 help !!!

i too am writing vj software, and am interested in knowing what kind of effects people would be interested in seeing. i'm coding it in max/msp, and am also designing a hardware interface around my software. the hardware'd be midi-based, which isn't very complex at all, and gives me a good deal of flexibility regarding control layout.

any and all suggestions/ideas are welcome, i've already taken note of the above ideas...temporal effects, live video streaming/sampling, color shifts/balance/palette reductions, mosaics, blurs (motion & gaussian)....compositing effects would be a must, methinks...

ok, so im new to this whole thing
but how about some kind of way of utilising photoshop/after effects plugins as fx, or is that illegal? surely not if the plugins are created by little people and not adobe

Nice 1 Awax!

right anything that is sound reactive is welcome.
external sound (mic) input a+

playback of any type of video (avi, mpeg, mov...)
playback scratching and morphing effects on video,

switch/fade/wipe interaction on key strokes/mouse moves

That's it not to complex but it needs to work
and not crash!!!

Oh and a low IQ proof interface...

:scared: :p

As far as coding photoshop-a-like filters, it's fair game, there's a whole lot of programs out there that already do it. I believe Paintshop Pro actually goes a step further, and can run third-party photoshop filter plugins.

Over the last few days I've got some Hue/Saturation/Value, Dodge, Burn, Exclusion, Erode and Dilate plugins for VisualJockey written, they aren't as speedy as I'd like, but any VJo-ers can mail me if they want to be a guinea pig...

framestein can use photoshop plugs in realtime... (but haven't tested yet)

Yep, I got it going yesterday and had a look at that, nice stuff. Sadly the photoshop filter running is done by a 3rd party piece of commercial pascal code (http://www.case2000.com/prod.php?id=41656), which isn't released with the source, so I can't muck around and see exactly how they're doing it.

It's got me wondering how hard an open source implementation would be though... Hmmmm, something to look into...

i posted this in a question in the software forum perhaps you could include this feature.

a feature that alters the frame rate of an .avi according to the bpm of an external sound source or midi clock signal?

all my material is lengthy, pre-rendered 3d animation. I want to animate my material to a beat and then play it in sync to live music.

since everything that has been mentioned can be found in one VJ soft or another, why not look at this software design in a whole new light...
What I would like is more of a Video Synth with midi clock, ie. slave and/or master tempo control, on the fly program change control, and a AV software sampler...
Maybe this is all still a ways away, but when someone gets around to making it, it will indeed shine....:)

personally i would like to see more of an integration between the audio and the visuals. Even at a basic level like having banks of audio filter fx as well as video based ones. Dont know if this could be done but a bpm counter for audio loops would be cool, would help me integrate when working with djs. vu meter would be a lux/conveniance when mixing from laptop only. A volume fader possibly?

More ideas to come i`m sure.

Best of luck with the project though

First of all it must be coded bugless (test it very well!!!) and with support for Matrox, ATI, Nvidia with all of specifications of graphics cards (DX 8.0 min). I found out that those VJs oriented sw are with lot of bugs (like other sw in my use). :-(

And if it is possible for characters (made with 3D sw like Maya, CinemaXL, 3D max.....) to dance as here with these http://www.spaceillusion.com/english/dance.htm
, but instead of original dance moves, moves can generate thru beat ...and you can choos between soft and hard moves...erotic and stoned dance moves....
