I will be in Los Angeles from Jan 17th to Feb 2nd, I am doing the video projections at the new Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Los Angeles Philarmonic Orchestra (the venue is amazing by the way and has been designed by architect Frank Gehry, take a look here http://www.musiccenter.org/wdch/index.html )
If you are from LA, I would like to hear more about the VJ scene there, if there are people or shows I shouldn't miss, and the like. I might also have the time to take a beer or two ;)
Thanks for your help :)

Uh oh. Don't tell Lil'Cat.:scared:
I think I'm in LA on the 26(?)th on tour with Hillary Duff. Not quite the Philharmonic, but there is an odd Disney connection....
Hmmm. Maybe Lil'Cat is right....

Hey! Any chance on getting some tix to the show? :D
The scene here in Los Angeles is growing - we've got LAVA (http://www.la-va.org) that lists upcoming VJ shows in and around Los Angeles - I'm sure these guys would be interested in coming to see your show. So far a lot of the scene is small clubs around the area - check out the LAVA calendar and see if you can make anything (new shows added sporadically)

Hillary Duff has a VJ? <gasp> rock on Holly...
Many2 & Holly if y'all find yourselves between San Fran and LA, swing through the lush town of Fresno. give me a page if you have some time to kill between shows/towns, or if you've got a couple free days, gimme notice and I can get'cha some small hoppin' shows with me... I think after playing with Disney tho, Fresno would be quite laughable... <sigh>

Well, this Hillary Duff tour is a trip! I'm on-stage with the band and Hillary - uh, I mean "Miss Duff" introduces me by name as "Holly, the cool Veejay that does all the video stuff".
:D
Actually the tour is really cute! I'm on the girl bus with H and her mom and the triplet back-up singers (yeah, triplets! Drool guys, drool). Everyone is great and no one has attitude (except the pimple-faced doofus running the projectors who keeps wandering off during rehearsals and tries to blame my rig for his crappy cables...). "VJing is just a fad," he says to my face..., yeah, it's showbiz: Everything is just a fad, the point is: do you have the balls to pull it off!
We played an arena in Baton Rouge last night and it must have been like 15,000 six to eightteen year olds screaming all at once: Hilar-EEEEeeeeee!!!! My upper hearing range will be shot for weeks to come.... Afterwards everyone asks me if I'm one of the keyboard players.

ok well someome keeps deleting my posts... but anyway Holly will be in LA for the next 2 Hilary Duff shows and if you are in the area check them out, at the very lest it will be a cool experience to see a VJ get the recognition that we all deserve, plus Holly is creating a great show!

holly,
I dunno; I don't think the triplets are so impressive unless the girls are bisexual. :) :P

Looks like it will be extended. They added a few more dates. I dunno if VJing is mainstream or not, but it certainly seems like they're taking to it. For the band it's all a given, you know, like obvious that I should be onstage with them jamming and what not. For the crew it's a little bit of a weird thing because they see it as if suddenly the lighting designer was onstage dancing around and being part of the act. They "get it" but they don't really see the point.
Since the job happened so suddenly I'm slowly building original content for it, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be "just another fad".

If you've ever seen Chris Kuroda's lighting performances with Phish, it's pretty similar - he's not on stage (I'm sure his lighting desk is a little too big) but he practices with the band with a mini-board and is basically considered a fifth member of the band (the really big fans all know who he is) - interview with him here - ck5.org (http://www.ck5.org/021207.html)
It's a little OT, I guess, but he puts on an awesome show and is a good example of a techie getting respect from the fans.

If I ever finally get into live intelligent lighting control and performance, I am going to call myself LD Apex (LD = Lighting Director). :)
Why the heck not have the lighting controllers rock out with the audio and visual performers?
