more the fool i am for not checking this subforum of late... there i was in san francisco saying we should go to jamaica next, and lo! here it is.

i'm quite serious about somewhere like jamaica, for this very simple reasoning: if people are going to have to pay their own plane fares, then lets go somewhere they'll want to go anyway, and somewhere partners could enjoy too.

also running vj festivals in vj towns like brighton and san francisco somehow just doesn't seem to pan out. lets make a big splash somewhere new and put visuals on their map!

the only problem is the airfare to jamaica from the uk is really huge, at least double what i've paid to new york or san francisco.

theopenairvit (http://www.avit.info/openairvit) idea would suit this well, btw.

if the venue is sorted, or you have the choice of the island, then its just about getting a group of people together who are going to do it, who will confirm to the travel costs and dates. thats all it takes, everything else falls into place around that... say just 10 vjs, a few tents, moonlit cove with screens in the trees... that would be amazing.

collaboration, celebration, and camping. from this (http://www.avit.info/media/gallery/album17/de03_falk_friday_006) in germany, to jamaica...

I know the people who run Sonrise Beach retreat

http://www.in-site.com/sonrise/

Its a bit off the beaten track, but it is the original 'Strawberry Fields' where all the pop stars used to hang out in the 60's, its also very beautiful and has very good facilities.

aaah. well, it wouldn't hurt to maybe drop them a line and find out how much it would be to block book the place for 5 days, and what on earth we could do to make it as affordable as possible... off-season, starving artists etc

Ok I will drop them a line.

Please bear in mind that flights around xmas time and easter will be around ?700, off season they are about ?400, however I have a friend who is a manager at BA, and in the past he has been able to get me flight for around ?250 off season.

cool, lets see...

i'd also found the ?700 mark for flights. ?250 plus a week at the place, a block booking of say 5-10 peeps from the uk, and wowsers could be a done deal.

it's about a third of the cost for me to go to jamaica than it is to go to san fran.

so long as we don't have to worry about a visa of any kind, i'm cool. i think it'll fall under tourist/travel. i'm sure there are some clubs or resorts down there that will let us rock out.

I'm thinking an all inclusive resort with a patio/garden area. we put on a good show and probably get a discount on our rooms and such.

I hear the steel drums already.

DarkShark..
One thing I know about Jamaica, is that bringing in a lot of gear can be troublesome when going thru custom's there...(because of the huge Black market..
Can you check into what it would take/cost to be flying in with gear?

The only other thing I would add that anywhere on the island but Kingston, would be fine with me..

Also maybe AVit Ja could be done around sunsplash, to be able to use the reggae sunsplash publisity to advertise AVit to those down there for that..(not to mention us VJ's who would like to see SuNSPALASH!!

just some o mi. thought's-

aaah, well no report back from miss 'clipse. sharky has been in touch on ichat, and is scoping things under the radar... an opportunity should come up sooner or later for an avit to latch onto. the kind of avit would i imagine be much more like the openairvit we had in germany - camping, collaboration and celebration - just swap a geeked out lakeside for palm trees, sweet sensi and the waves crashing in. aaah. thats worth sand in the laptop =]

if its sand in your laptop your after toby you should come and visit me in india, we have a wonderful fine grain of sand/dust that gets absolutely everywhere, and an abundance of local herbs. ;)

think we're a few years off AVit india tho... all in due course...

If you take valuable gear to places like this and intend not to sell it but to bring it back, you can go to your cities customs departement and issue an inf document on your gear. that means they write down all serial numbers of the devices, description and then seal it. (what means you cannot use it until you arrived in jamaica or somewhere else. ) in the destination country the customs now know that the gear is brought for your own use or for repair issues. when leaving the country they will compare serial numbers listed in the inf document to the gear you take with you. (you better take care nothing is missing...)

AVIT Jamaica <-> AVIT retreat.....

I see no difference other then location between an chilly OpenAirVIT style AVIT Jamaica and the proposed AVIT retreat in multiple locations... Would be way cool to fuse them all and have a world wide VJ retreat week with lots of local emphasis but global connections... I post more in the AVIT retreat forums... but I think its worth thinking about (what a stupid sentence ;)
