here's a question that might make the pros laugh... but the answer might be useful for many of us not so common with electronics - like me!
if one wants to work with older hardware which has NO internal TBC/frame synchronizer, you only get scrambled signals. is there any cheap and decent way to sync two signals? like some cute little box - two unsynced sources in, two synced sources out... :) ?
thanks alot !

you need a 2 channel TBC / frame syncroniser
there not cheap (from ?450 ish upwards) and you can genrally find a second hand mixer for much less so genrally its not worth it
there are a few diffrent models of tbc for sale @

thanks for the link...
so there ARE cute litte boxes with ins and outs - but the price: wheew!
most mixer do of course sync, but they put ONE signal out - not much use, if you need two synced signals for other equipment.
well, maybe something shows up...
wonder how they did it before digital frame buffering?

you can use a cheap panasonic mixer as a tbc / framesync - i have used my AV5 to sync 2 video sources for my fairlight...
source1 > input1 av5 >>> AV5 record out >>fairlight input1
source2 > input2 av5 >>> AV5 preview out >>fairlight input2
set the AV5 to mix so that source one comes out of the mainout and the preview shows source two - then the signals will be synced.....

you can allso sync 3 divices by spliting the signal of the third and putting it into the external cam input - this will genlock the other two sources to the third signal and will provide you with 3 synced signals - you can extend this principal with more mixers and wotnot.

I quite often use a second MX1 in the same way in my live rig...... CVIs with TBC = the BOMB :D
BTW someone is working on a small cheep modular TBC which will be perfect for mounting inside the CVI :)

The best way to do this would be to buy a vendors liscense, which is about $100-$200 depending on where you are. To set up an LLC it'll be about $800, with federal tax ID, etc... but even if you just get a vendors liscense you can then buy a TBC from the source... those then cost about $40... less if you buy thousands at a time.

You'll have to assemble to unit yourself... you're paying for the part that actually corrects the time base, not for the plugs.
