Hey folks jsut wondering if anyone knows of any software that can sample small bits from a DVD eg. say I jsut want a 2 sec clip from a film or something (fair use :-p ) without ripping the whole movie?

If you got a matrox, that's easy : zoom mode, plug the video output to the capture card, run virtual dub , launch your dvd and you're done ! (i guess)

smartripper will letyou rip by chapter and then you can use the vfpi codec and dvd2avi to create an avi of just the sample you want.

virtualdub mpeg-2 edition can handle *.vob files
just open them directly from dvd [or rip needed chapters previously], cut needed pieces and save them as avi - for me, the fastest and easiest way of working with dvd stuff
