Hello all.
I am new here but... liking the place...

I am in a Pink Floyd tribute act in Michigan USA. We are having our big show in January 2004 at an old multi-level church converted to a live music venue. We want to have a circular screen above us and rear projection from behind. We will have considerable lights pointing out to the audience. Based on everything I've read here, I can make a suitable screen from parachute type material. I will probably securely wrap it around a circular thingy and hang from the ceiling. The projector will probably be 10-12 feet behind (there's a loft above the band) and secure from the audience. The screen will be about 10 -12 feet in the air above the band. The projector will need to be rented at this point and I am thinking about 2000 Lumens. We will get a circular image by positioning a cardboard circular cut out in front of projector lens. We will play movie clips, Floyd videos, rare footage etc. These will most likely all be burnt to DVD's with someone running it for us on cue. Would a laptop be better? One of these can be acquired. If a laptop, what software is usually used to simplify fade in's outs, video changeovers, etc?

Many thanks everyone. I appreciate the help. If I've missed anything please let me know.

Alex.

yeah using dvds would be good, you just need a video mixer.
also you wont need to use cardboard circle cutout in front of your projector if youre rear projectin

10'-12' behind the screen will hardly suffice if you want the image to be larger than 4'-6'... i project 10'x7.5' and i have to be about 20'-25'... they do have projectors that are meant to throw at fairly short distances so you might have to look into that...

Witrh that sort of throw I would use a 0.8 short throw lens. 9ft throw will give you a 12 x 9 image no problem.
Cardboard mask will work , but if you can afford then use a vision mixer.

I will probably securely wrap it around a circular thingy and hang from the ceiling

Instead of making a circular frame you might find that someone in your area already has one. A few phone calls to film/theatre/TV art directors could save you a lot of work.

Did you like the "Dub Side of the Moon" reggae album?

zeberifo why dont you try and find a local vj to run the video side of the show for you?

if its this fab an event it would really make sense for the video to be as spot on pro as your show.

then you wouldnt be having to worry about cowboying things that take a lot of time and practice to do well. after all you wouldnt consider giving the gig to a bass player who asks "whats an amplifier?" a month before the show

after all Pink Floyd have their own Video crew, so why shouldnt the faux- floyd have a vj,

I cant see dave Gilmour faffing around with projectors :)

Im sure theres loads of yank vjs whod love to do this, and do it well,

Seems like inflatible pigs and lasers should take care of it.

If you're going to recreate the band, then why not recreate the videos. Make dvds of your own version of the videos from scratch. Then, you'll be equivocating your own version of the music.

Otherwise the video vj component is going to be more akin to a dJ playing Floyd songs, and the point would seem to be that you can reinterpret them. Bring in more creativity to the video process and the results will make your audience feel as if they're getting more than just a showing of "live at Pompei" with less expensive analog gear making the sound.

Suspicious of all cover bands,

ok, circular screen.
get some plastic conduit from an electrical merchant, and a few (4)connectors.
bend it into a hoop. use a few strands of fishing line to keep it stable if need be.

then, find a theatrical draper and buy some inherently fireproof material, like voile or treviera. if you don:t use this the fire officer will make you take it down.

either staple the material to the conduit or better still, get some one to sew a seam in it and thread the conduit, maybe in 4 sections...
that way the whole thing takes to bits and folds.
