hi,
i've been to ibiza this year for the first time and must say that i was quite disappointed by the self-declared "party island".
i didn't go there to party all the time - my first choice was looking around the island and swimming with the fishes - it worked, nice beaches, great water :) so for summer holidays, it's ok BUT quite expensive! everything is expensive, even food in the supermarket...
clubwise, they are totally mad - BUT not because the partys are great, but it's all a total ripoff!
an example: the cocoon mondays at amnesia will cost you 40 euros at the door. if you manage to get your tickets earlier, it might be "just" 25. a glass of water costs 8 euro! a small bad spanish beer 12!! i've seen this guy ordering five beers for his friends and when they said "60 euros" he went pale like in a holdup!
for this you get a 3000+ ppl club divided in two lamely decorated floors. the sound system in the housegarden is plainly bad. the light is boring - if you think in a famous, expensive and widely covered club like that you get top-notch technique like the latest lasershow, forget it! you can read a book in every corner. do NOT expect the people to party wildely. you may easily find a sexier and more intense atmosphere at your local pub.
the staff and silly gogo-dancers are bored and arrogant, the aircondition will give you a cold, and by 7 in the morning it's all over! if you have any money left, you can buy your entrance to "afterhours" somewhere else.
maybe this is not of any interest here, but the VJ side... well, there isn't any. some screens are plastered over the walls, but to no effect. it's just some element more in a no-concept, low interest look. when i was there (july 14), half the time they played advertisements for the other evenings! the other half was even worse: a short, boring, cheesy loop with photo-soaped morphs of sven vaeth
i'm afraid its not much different in other locations. the terms VJ or visuals do not appear once in the islands DJ magazine...
a shame, because some of us could spend the summer there gigging and having a good time... but no call for that - maybe it would cost some money and that surely all goes to the local mafia don (who maybe will have me shot for that post!)
i suppose this island is seriously spoiled, party-wise - all due to greed. the good spots to be seem to be in the east now, all that freetek stuff... i hope they can resist that capitalistic bullshit for a while....
besides: anyone, have a good time on the island, i hope you have fun and prove me wrong! :)

Shame some of the clubs are like that.
Actually surprising too as a lot of the ibiza crowd/event are from the UK so you would have thought that they would want to have visuals.
(In reference to the Uk seemingly having more VJ's then anywhere else. :);) )
Shame. :(

Well, I haven't been in Ibiza but Paco Osuna came to my country in the Ibiza Party we made a month ago and let me tell you that is the worst DJ ever, it match the description above very well.
Paco Osuna came and the first thing he said was "I need 2 more turntables if not I won't play", too sad there was already 2 turntables and that was it.
Then: "If I do not have 2 girls in my hotel room I do not play" well, talking like that he won't find any venezuelan girl at all.
All this conversation was comming from the airport, Paco Osuna, his "agent", DJ Noisbuilder and me driving.
When he got to the satge he wated to play 4 hours, we said 2 because we had 6 DJs that night in that event. Well, there was a party when he started and a party when he left just because he left, no one wanted him, he played flat boring house music, he may be moved the EQ once, every time he move the faders to slice the sound at the beat he was off the beat. I mean, did we paid I do not know how many euros for this? any venezuelan DJ with a month of experience can do just this!
Ok, he played 2 hours because the public was getting agresive and as he speack spanish too he felt some tension and he left.
That was a saturday, they left sunday afternoon, our suprice was when he left a $800 room service account and phone bill account!, he got here friday night and by then $800!!!
Of course I didn't hire him, the girl who hire him had to paid from her pocked the money.
That was the very nice experience with Paco Osuna resident from Ibiza, it match all the descriptions of the place abouve. His manager said all the time "it is a matter of teaste, in Ibiza he si good" no wonder Amnesia-Ibiza is a shit then.
Those are my final words, expect anything (bad) from people from there, we even had to paid in advance the rights to use the name Amnesia!!!

tough story! well i would never say the island is overall bad, and sure there are some nice people there and one can have a good time if you are at the right spot at the right time.
i just feel sorry that after some time it seems every place everywhere seems to be taken over by the wrong people who are just into quick money. be it some sunny island our your local underground venues. i guess we all have seen it happen... the crowd changes, the nice spirit is lost.
but then, i swear thats what the old ibiza hippies said when the club crowd first showed up years ago... ;)
