Is it a pain with the Rebelle becuase the jack plugs are all over the place too near the knobs leading to cables in the way?

Nice setups by the way :) I dont think my setup is interesting enough to post yet, just a couple of dull midi devices really, I'll post some piccies when Ive built aome DIY Midi stuff thats more interesting.

Do you think I would be sad if I used neon string to make some devices look more space-age, or would it be tacky? (neon string =http://www.spodesabode.com/content/article/neon available in lots of colours, needs an invertor to power.)

LEVLHED
6th August 2002, 07:14 PM
the cables get in the way a little, but it isn't as bad as it looks for access to the knobs...and I think the neon string is a good idea...punters eat that shit up! would be an excellent way to draw more attention to yourself (if thats what you want)...

I don't think my rig is that impressive either....other than it might be impressive that I can accomplish ANYTHING in the mess...I'm sure everyone is curious about everyone elses kits...don't be shy..

To control the Hippotizer you actually use the "Keypad Console", and the hippotizer does come with a CD drive to upload your own content, be it a visualJockey composition or a simple video loop. For more info please take a look at :
http://www.hippotizer.com/

As soon as I receive mine you will get a full review, with a little positive bias since I've been collaborating to the Hippotizer project ;)

OK WTF is the "Keypad Console"?? Is the CD-ROM drive inside that unit or how does it connect???

Hmmm the website is pretty and flashy but a lacking on real info that I wanna know.....

Isn't their a rule on here about ppl reviewing their own products????

ElektroMotif
8th August 2002, 07:15 PM
I have had a demo of the Hippotiser up here at Gatecrasher in Sheffield

I shan't post comments directly about it as a unit but probably right a review also.

The control is through a reduced keyboard similar to a till keyboard and that connects via PS2

Since the unit is based on a PC architecture running a modified version of VJo it is feasable to connect other control peripherals with normal PCI expansions but I do not know whether the modified software will have these functions.

Certainly the Hippotiser comes with the keyboard as standard, however the unit can be customised.

These are my personal opinions and are in no way to do with either Green Hippo or Gatecrasher

many2
8th August 2002, 08:29 PM
About the CD-ROM I suppose it's in the main unit, but since I haven't got my own hippotizer yet I can't be sure. What I do know is that if you use the online form on the hippotizer website the Green-Hippo team will be glad to help you and give you any information you might need on their hardware.

I do know there is a rule against people reviewing their own work but since I should be one of the first to have the hippotizer it would have been a pleasure for me to describe it. Since I only contributed content and effects for the machine, and only worked through the internet, much of this machine is still a mystery for me. Well, I think I will only post info on the forum and let someone else review the hippotizer console.

Hey !!! I have a hippotizer!
well so far Ive a rack drawer, a spare key pad and a spare cd drive... from what Im seeing on the web site, all i need now is swinging door to wedge open with it all.

PS2,,,
I got roped into the Dublin launch of that contraption, some of the techs from sony where wandering about making muttiring noises about a standalone box/mixer/controler of some sort capable of doing alsorts of Bajazzus clever shit with multiple feeds and 3d spinny all singing and dancin screen o/p's. all based on their new chip.
I havent heard anything about it since. For some strange reason my gut instinct tells me its not the hippo.

Anyways Back to the topic.

Heres a few pics from home.

Here is some info I got from a dudeski from Green Hippo:

Not much to tell on the technical spec as the Hippotizer Lite is designed to
be a solution in a box for those who don't have the time or ability to learn
something as splendid but sophisticated as Vjo. It's beauty is it's
simplicity. At the moment there isn't much to send you other than that
shown on the website but I'll try to give you an overview:

Outputs are VGA or Video (not simultaneous although we have found the unit
is fine with video and S-video simutaneously) Because we are selling
predominantly to the UK market the system outputs PAl although other
srtandards are possible and will be released.

Inputs: There are several ways to input media:
1. Upload from CD Rom. This feature allows the user to create a disc with
media and upload it to the Hippotizer from the CD Rom bay. The unit has 12
shows (each with 10 scenes) pre-loaded but the remaining 7 shows (again with
10 scenes each) are available to you. By cross referencing with a supplied
table the user can decide which show/scene will provide the best effects and
by burning a CD using our template the media can be uploaded to that
location.
2. Run from CD Rom: Similar to the above but runs from the CD Rom bay. If
the user wants to display media without interupting the display, show 20
runs from the CD Rom. Great for quick display of digital photos or 'on the
fly' video clips.
3. Network: we have allowed access to the media folders so footage/stills
can be dumped into the relevant directories over a network.

If you are a regular Vjo (or other VJ software) user you may find the system
a bit less configurable than you are used to. By 'solution in a box'
standards the unit far outstrips the competition. It is intuitive and
allows (no encourages!!) creativity. Plus no other commercial hardware
solution allows the user to upload their own media. Most manufacturers want
to make money from you by making you return to them for graphics. But we
don't like to insult our users. As the Vjo forum shows, creativity in VJing
is huge. People want a creative tool not just a 'pretty picture' maker.

I suppose in terms of you being a Vjo regular you may wonder what you would
use The Hippotizer for. Well this is how we see it. VJing is about to
explode. The men in suits within big commercial chains are buzzing about it
being the next big thing. If anyone is going to support this change we'd
like it to be us. From a VJs perspective, the hardcore boys would probably
prefer to use their own PCs. However, imagine when VJing becomes as
accepted as DJing, you arrive at a venue knowing that all you need to bring
is your upload CD with your own media on it and away you go. There is
easily enough flexibility in the system for a VJ to put on a stunning show.

If you are keen on the idea of the unit, and because you are o forum
regular, I might be able to send you a copy of the manual when it's finished
(being tweeked at the moment). This would probably give you a better
insight. Let me know if you'd like me to do that.

Hmmmm compare it to the other pictues mate, its pretty friggin tight compared to the 10 tonnes of crap other ppl drag to a gig, I normally use 2 lappies, 1 MX1, VCD and CVI, but @ this gig I use and extra MX1 as a cam switch and had some promo material that had to come from VHS, hence the extra kit. All the crap under the table (besides the CVI mainunit) ain't mine....... damn ppl always wanting to put there crap down with you :( do I LOOK LIKE A FRIGGIN CLOAKROOM!!!

Some times when space is REALLY @ a premium I only run 1 laptop, now thats ubercommando :) and sorry I don't rate laptop only solutions I mean I would NEVER allow a bluescreen or desktop to come up in my show so you gotta have a mixer and another source, thats as tight as it gets.

Just a pic of my little set-up, not at all up to par with these riggin outfits, but I'm no performer, just a tinkerer.

I'm sending a 300 ft. radial signal from a jacked up video transmitter to the rest of the antennae equipped tvs in my building. UHF 19. I hope to up my distance and amplify my signal more but have to keep in check with the FCC, or they might come knocking on my door. I'm sticking with the late night sporadic broadcasts.

red, of course... i was just rising morph in terms of being a lappy vj...

for the record, my lappy failed me four times in the first six/seven months i had it, and has been flawless for the 7 months since i worked out the rules of the game:
1. clean out the insides with compressed air can regularly.
2. always sit tibooks raised at least 5mm above the surface below (my box for it does this wonderfully upside down using the rubber feet as spacers).
3. don't upgrade OS hours before gigging.
4. once learnt, stick to these rules as its always going to go wrong when you're at some else's gig... as you and NE1 know.

and yes, acts of god will always happen, but its the same for uber rigs...

Me with most of my gear. I use 2 laptops, Peavey 1600x midi slider controller, 1 cheap ass keyboard controller, shuttlejog controller, 2 DV cameras. One camera (sony TRV-900) with shutter controls and 12 realtime effects, and the other (sony TRV-10) to playback tapes and have as another live source. I like using DV decks instead of VCD's cause I'm lazy and the Fastforward/Rewind and slow forward/back have nice qualities to their distortions on DV cams/decks.

heh - people always want to know about those. They're Sony DVP-PQ2s (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=qfX-6OKjpYP-wqLjY2n0462sS-WiicSUHFg=?CategoryName=hav_DVD_DVDPortables&ProductSKU=DVPPQ2&Dept=hav). $90 DVD players available at Specialty Video Shops. No fancy features, but they're angled and the top opens with a push on the lid, so they make for EZ dvd swapping (and they don't seem to mind being opened while discs are still playing). Also, they play VCD, SVCD and DVD-R no problem.

The DM2 setup belongs to VJ Fader, who was playing with me that night. Better pic of his rig: http://www.luminedesign.com/syn_2_26_04/images/PICT0054.jpg

Yeah check shop.sonystyle-europe.com. I've got a link but I'm not sure if it will work cause it's got a session ID in it: DVP-PQ2 (http://shop.sonystyle-europe.com:80/SonyStyle/b2c/readshop.do;jsessionid=ID4001DB0.4906663379415782E nd?languageId=EN&nextExecute=/catalog/z_InitShopISAEntry.do&redirected=true&servername=www.sonystyle-europe.com&z_Forward=setDefCatalog2&campaignId=GB_ENB_01&countryId=GB&SonyForward=DeepLinkQuery&s=external&ss=home&shopId=SST_GB_EN)

VJ Fader is using the software "Neuromixer" that he wrote himself. You can contact him via the LAVA page here (http://www.la-va.org/profile.php?artist_id=24) .

He's still working the bugs out, but he does want to sell it eventually - drop him a line and I'm sure you could work something out ;)

I think that picture was taken last time pixylight was rocking with us, so theres a few things of jym's in there, other than that its our studio and live equipment all laid out in one place for pure technical gratification, any of the studios we set up in never normally look that tidy!

I'm setting up my new studio in Delhi at the moment, i'll post pics when we finally get this looking decent :)

Geese Im enjoying this thread.
While DJ's enjoy getting thier photo taken every 32.4 seconds,
of course no one actually takes photos of the poor VJ tucked in that dark little corner. People must think we're cockroaches and afraid of light or something. Heres the only picture I have - of ME in all the gigs I've done. And still some little shit DJ has to jump into the shot. Perhaps it was actually just a shot of the DJ - and it just happened to be near me. ...

I used an existing DJ "briefcase" style console to hold my DVD01, AVM, and triple LCD (3+6+3=12U total). There was enough room for the covers to fit on but the DVD controller is currently hanging 1U off the front and the LCD unit is 1U of the back. Since I don't have a DVD collection to perform an entire HS dance with DVDs, it was inserted onto a channel of my 2x CDX/DJM-3000 coffin.

CAMERAS:
I also had 2 video cameras and the s-video output on my laptop all running through the AVM. My first camera was a SONY TRV-50 ($1500 a few years and lived on a tripod for crowd shots. The second camera was used as a DJ coffin camera and it did awesome considering that it was B&W and only cost $25-$25 mail-in rebate.

LAPTOP:
I created a powerpoint presentation with a blue background on each slide. This allowed me to mix just a specified graphic or title over a DVD or video feed by using the COLOR KEY feature.

DVDs:
PROMO ONLY, SCREEN PLAY, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, WIZARD OF OZ (DANCE THEME WAS EMERALD CITY), & LUMINOUS VISIONS (CLASSIC 3D EFFECTS DVD)

SCREEN/PROJECTOR:
I used a 9x12 RP fastfold and an EPSON 1,200 LUMEN projector. The room was relatively dark (b/c we had two laser shows going) so the screen was still very bright (despite the whimpy projector).

All in all, my setup was far from simple and I only used audio from the DVD system a few times throughout the night. It was nice having a guy to run the video system and cameras while I DJed. I would have struggled to run it all myself.

Check out these prices:
NUMARK DVD01 - $619 (incl. 1 ScreenPlay DVD)
NUMARK Audio/VIDEO MIXER - $650
NUMARK Triple LCD RRACK - $650

It would be nice to have the $$$ to get the DVJs now but I'm sure that it will be MUCH more affordable next year.

Details of the how the system worked are in my next post...

Here is a picture of my setup (http://public.fotki.com/gpvillamil/vj_gigs/img_8959.html).

Basically:

Korg Entrancer
Korg Krossfour
IBM Thinkpad
UC33e MIDI controller
DVD player
DV cam
Distribution amp

Almost everything works in place, so it takes about 5 minutes to set up. The computer travels in its own case, the MIDI controller goes in a box with the monitors. However, the lid of the main case has fittings for the laptop and the MIDI controller which makes setup easier.

Everything is velcro'd to neoprene blocks for absorbing shock and vibration.

I spent quite a lot of time shortening leads and attaching them to "elbow" (90 degree) fittings to save space - 7cm centimeter required clearance goes down to 3cm.

My plan is to build another smaller case for the computer and related stuff. When I work with other VJs, I can get by with taking only that smaller case (in Tokyo almost everyone has an Entrancer and/or V4).

this is my modest little corner where i work on content at home. on the floor by the chairs i'm working on sorting out my collection of tangled cords, one the finest in the country. My rig is pretty basic, i also have 2 benq pb6100 projectors which i decided to leave at the club instead of taking down/putting up at every gig. The laptop is a toshiba 3.4ghz P4 with 1 gig of ram and an nvidia gforce 5700, dvd rw. Now that ive played some gigs i wish i would have bought a 61 key midi controller rather than the tiny oxygen...but i saw the oxygen and it was so cuuute! i had visions of putting it in a backpack so i could take it all with me (hilarious!) Imagine me pulling out all that crap at a coffee shop somewhere for a few quick renders.

Hay I have the same mixer, small n spiffy lil thing apart from that fader, mine broke off too recently. Is that a fag butt?
they are impossible to glue back too, considering to put it in a new case with customized buttons and a proper T-bar.

Yes, its a fag butt, a Royal, I believe :D
Sadly, it didn't work very well, or in fact at all.
It is a lovely little mixer though, (a bargain ?74 off eBay!), and losing the fader is no real problem, it was always too sticky for fast cross-fading and the auto-fade and keying work really well so I just use those. Let me know how you get on with the case mods!

you can learn the keypad shortcuts for the av55 / mx20 - nearly all the functions have a numeric shortcut - they are listed in the back of manual.

@ dave - that humbucker is ok although somewhat less solid construction than it should be - it does 8 channels of video and 8 channels of audio - its a pain to switch between 110v and 240 as it uses an internal jumper thingy.

i prefer the allen avionics ones although they are not rackmount - they are better constructed and totaly pasive so don't need any power. (more expensive per channel though)

How are you finding the CG-8? I am thinking of getting one. Does it mean you don't need a Kaoss pad? Someone said to me recently that they are almost the same thing. Is this right? I'm hoping so cos the CG-8 is ?3000 and the Kaoss is ?700 and I would rather shell out the ?3000 if it can handle the Kaoss job too.

Not a brilliant photo but here's mine from last Sat (28th Oct 06, SEOne London, 4,000 crazy clubbers in attendance). The 3 lipstick cams, one of the V4's and the quad monitor set were courtesy of Garry at Deepvisual with the rest of the gear my normal set up.
I was running Arkaos, Motiondive and Resolume through a Dell XPS 1710 (upgraded) and a Compaq R3000 and 2 Pioneer DVJ X1's. 2 V4's, 3 Toshiba lipstick cams and a JVC GR-D200 DV cam. I added a Pioneer HD 720s DVD recorder to record parts of the performance and live DJ sets and I control Arkaos with my trusted Oxygen8 midi keyboard.....like farrside I'm proud of mine:).......Now if you want to add a CG8 Edirol :D

adding a DM2 soon, thinking about a scan convertor but have no use for one at present.

Hey Farrside, so you finally bought some new toys eh? Hope you have some fun, that home studio looks pretty slick.

Thanks! I do have allot of fun. I use Premier Pro 2.0 too. Made a few videos for practice but I am about to move on to bigger projects.
Vjamm Pro is the VJ software I chose in the end. Goes so well with the Novation SL25 keyboard I have. They are tied by auto midi mapping which takes allot of the heat of assigning each action one-by-one.
Just got that DAC200 (on the top shelf) so now I can record what I mix straight back on to my HD Camcorder.
It's taken some thought and some heated discussions on this sight, but I'm really pleased with what I have. It's compact but packs a real creative punch.

I will be at the AV Social on the 4th of November (This Saturday) and would love to meet as many people from this site as possible. Please make yourself known to me. I will be the bloke with the Gold tooth. You can't miss me. Or better still, check me out at http://www.myspace.com/tonyfarr

I use a DVDO HD scaller to do the same thing you use the DSC1024 for. I have found (having used both the DSC1024 HD and the DVDO HD) that the DVDO HD produces a better scalled video signal, but it lacks the down conversion that the DSC1024 has.(and that the 1024 will output to componet/composite/s-video).

I agree that a dedicated scaler will give a better image than the Sony DSC1024, we usually use Extron or Imagenics scalers here. The 1024 is famous (notorious?) for a slight softening of the image, but as an all-round conversion tool it is very hard to beat for overall performance. It is a shame that Sony decided to discontinue making them.

It's my brother and it was Nestopia running a boxing game - that particular night (Too Damn Glam) has a theme each month and the theme this month was 'play house', so I used a vintage computer game as a layer in my set that night, there was someone playing sonic for a while as well as pacman, boxing and many others - all the visuals were based on kids toys etc. I raided the Barbie website for pictures and edited and animated some together in flash, did some lego stop motion etc. all lots of fun.

Not a bad little collection there hama. For the gear whores, the middle row is the Edirol CG-8, Korg Entrancer, keyboard. The top row looks to be camera, MFB VJ player and MFB VJ mixer

Morph is right on all accounts, the grey unit above the typing keyboard
is a yamaha dx200, great lil FM-Synth and Midi controller

the MFB VJ-Mixer is out of production, maybe for the better, they never managed to fix the colordrop problem on the output for good....

btw: yes, i still have all those old hama units, but they are stashed anyway
at the moment, til my vj-museum is open for business:)

Is it a motu soundcard directly below the DX200?

that's a DOD Spectrum Analyser, the soundcard on this computer is a
inca88, the orange box below the monitor to the right.

my little rig @ Treetz, Paard van Troje, Den Haag.

http://www.cheverno.nl/treetz_20-10-2007/

I used:

- my own lappie: ASUS M6V
- 2 V4
- 3 DVD players (I asked for another laptop but they gave me a laptop with Vista, which I never used before and gave errors with my vj software, so I got another dvd player)
- M-audio o2 MIDI keyboard
- 3 previewscreens

Haha, yes Gary I did get the inspiration from your VJ tutorials.

As an experienced auteur, you should know it's all about the camera angle!

IMO, the CG-8 demo shows how random sound-activated video.. just like random sound-activated lighting.. is good enough for most club-style environments.

Definitely still a works in progress!

Everything is pre-wired and shock-mounted in place, so the flight cases wheel from studio > van > gig and back again. I find it easier to have the studio and live setup the same.

Everytime I see the Arkaos software I keep thinking I should just go ahead and buy it. I think it would work really well next to isadora....

Just seems so simple.... Nice interface.... hmmm....

Hambone

I find that the Arkaos VJ synth-analogy interface works really well with Ableton Live. I sequence and play it just like any other instrument.

skulpture
28th April 2008, 09:14 PM
Yeah thats what i was thinking... I can do it with isadora... but, well I suppose and I admit its just lazy of me, but arkaos just seems so easy to work with and sometimes thats all you need.

Donnie Darko

yup, thanks for the link gary :) thats what it does..
basically i forsee its future use for mucking with a live input before then layering ontop

i find if i use it to effect the total output (like i tried in the pic) its a little overkill and it all looks a lil muddy.. the digitize effect is the best part - can play with that and other effects and get basically a rotoscoped effect :)
works well with vj faders recent free loop pack which you might be able to just make out on my screen
got it on ebay for $125AUS (VERY HAPPY!)

gary, what do use yours for? would be very interested to find out
i found the perfect case for mine, an old PS2 (fat not slim) case

p.s. the setup looks a lot more complex than it is due to that beast vestax mixer which we werent even using, if it were setup on a plain table it would look far less intense
plus its basically me verse a mate - so he'd create something on his MDT and I'd create something with VDMX and we'd mix together.. I def wasnt doin it all by myself

i think my next purchases are gonna be a padkontrol, and a cheap suitcase for a poor mans flightpack - my backpack can only handle so much gear!!
plus some pants... only got one pair left without holes and im buying video equipment.. wtf is wrong with me. :crazyeyes

Powerbook & MBP, with 2 custom VJ patches, V4, KPE, Monitor, Fader fox DJ2 for 1 of the Patches, my external drive and a monitor.

I am hoping to get some pics of the actual show soon.

What kind of camera/what kind of software running on the macbook?

Camera is an old Sony VX1000 (3CCD, manual controls, not great in low light and no LCD viewfinder - you have to use it properly!!). The tripod is a Libec. Software on both Powerbook and MacBook Pro is Modul8. Also visible (just) is a RedSound Microsync, an S-Vid 1:4 DA and an NEC VT59 projector and remote.

The stands for the 2 laptops are:

- Stanton Uberstand
- Griffin Elevator.

I wouldn't recommend the Uberstand....Too top heavy and you have to use a zip tie to stop it falling over..............shame.
