this comes from wellredman:-
whylimit it to doubling up,
we could have 3 or 4 rigs set up mixing to just the one set of music
when an av act is on they could have the main screen(s), feed thair output to the others who could remix it live....
maybe we should start thread re: equipment, find out how many
people own their own Beamers/screens and mixers and who would be up for bringing them along
stevefromnewcastle is co-ordanateing the hardware side i'll hand it oiver to him :)

sorry about that guys I was away on holiday and then working in a field in the middle of nowhere for a week.
Now I am back, and on the case.
I read the chat log from last night and a few things have come up.
1- Anyone playing who is not bring kit please post your requirments so me can make sure everyone has everthing they need.
2- We need to decide how everyone wants to be linked together and how projector allocation is going to happen.
3 - I am thinking about getting a routing matrix but that depends on whether we really need it.
4 - How many people are going to be able to help rig, I am bring a couple of guys but we will need others.
@ the moment we have at least 8 projectors so it should be a good night.
I am happy to be in the venue all day setting this up, but I will need help. Also I will prepare a wireing and set up diagram in the next 2 weeks please give me feed back on it.
I am not say I am the best at wireing this event together but I will do my best, input before the event is always better than during the event.

2x PC
5xLCD
1 x MX50
2 x Scan converter
1 x Mini DV player
1 x Mini DV camera
1 x DVCam camera
1 x 600 lumen Projector
2x 11m x 2.6m white projection material
Like Red most of this kit is hot wired into a flightcase which I work from, its plug and play so I can move into position quick The space needed is 1m x 0.5m,table top space.
I will be filming the event too an I do a wicked jiggery pokery live camera.
Unj was talking about filling smaller areas so the low powered beamer is a useful addition.

ah ha, forgot about this thread having done it verbally... but i'm not going to be much use as my record bag laptop live philosophy doesn't really help here, and my filming stuff will be used for recording the workshops.
but i do have a 19" rackmount case with 2x VHS decks and room for a DVD player etc - very suitable for one of the 'generic' mixing rigs. oh, and a seriously long video spec cable or two

we are getting there I have compiled an exel spreadsheet of what we have who is bring what i will post that tonight when I get back from work.
We need to decide how many seperate rigs we want and how many vjs on at once etc and how many projectors each vj gets.
This will allow me put together the wiring diagram.
Also a week or so before the gig I will send out a sheet to each person bringing stuff, this will list what you are bringing, it will also have some stickers to go on your equipment so that it doesn't get mixed up with other peoples kit. I intend to sign in and out all equipment so nothing gets lost.

sounds good :)
i would like to see 4 vj's upstairs linked up to 6-8 projectors, poss 3 for the main stage, yes we can have a vj up there with the dj on stage but we will argue about that one latter, and at least 1 projector for the outher 3 if not more, depending upon the number we get
and we need at least 2 projectors for the downstairs visual clash/jams
wellREDman
2nd September 2002, 06:34 PM
whats about having vj's upstairs,
we should have all the rigs set up so's the punters can see over our shoulders, the whole point of this is to educate people as to what we do right?

well, now that I appear to be making the journey...I will have my rebelle and a couple of portable VCD players...I will need a voltage converter to get to the USA standard of 110v....I might be able to bring my 1,300 lumen infocus if needed....but I plan to travel rediculously light.....

I should imagine the more beamers the better but I'm sure we can manage without 2

red, unfortanatly due to the bilding space constraints then we are not going to be able to have a set up like that ware the audiance can see what we are doing :(
but we have had a day of that kind of thing so that will have to do
wellREDman
3rd September 2002, 01:52 PM
maybe make a feature of it then, let punters come up in small groups to wach the vj's in action,
remmember most of em wont have been to the workshops

3rd September 2002, 02:22 PM
that might work but logisticly i could see it being a bit of a nightmare!
wellREDman
3rd September 2002, 02:32 PM
yeah a bit of extra grief but i think it would be worthwhile in the raising vj profile stakes,
we just get someone to be in charge of the "backstage tours"
or maybe take it in turns
a usefull second chance to explain stuff to the punters i reckon
and build the hype about vj's if they think its a privelige to see us in action

Sound to me like theres gonna be a need for a Vj to Vj the VJs.
i think this is actually quite likely - to my understanding there is going to be space for one rig on stage and the rest in the gallery, so it seems natural to me to have the vj on stage acting more as a compere mixing a central screen with dj names, cameras and the other vj's mixes. ok compere isn't the word but you see the distinction...?
ps. this has gone OT!

Live video of the VJ's being VJ'd itself gets my vote if space & resources are permitting.
That VJS event was an interesting way to do it by having the VJs working in the background behind a semi-transparent screen (someone with a brain will explain it better) but I did keep wanting to see what they were doing more clearly the whole time.

well apart from the fact that i dont know why anyone would whant to see a 10ft image of a knob twiderlers ugley mug then i'd go with spark on this one
p.s whats OT?

OT: off topic, as in this!

Whenever I can, I try to face my screens towards the audience, if on stage with a band or even in the lighting or DJ booth. I think that is as much you can do to share the "workings" when you are actually focused on 5 monitors, midi keyboards, vision mixer and what you're gonna throw in next..........
Mind you, it still means people wanna ask you "where the toilet is?" or "can you get my mate in at the door?".....even when you are on stage!?!?!?:D
I think that the earlier venues/event is good enough to give people a taster...then again, why don't we just let people have a go themselves...hehe:):D

context is everything, *****. this is a functional thread about getting a point across, semantics can go hang - 'vj' isn't in the oxford english dictionary, and it can mean what you want it to as long as it serves a purpose.
anyway, as i said earlier... this has gone off-topic so back to equipment listings pretty please!

after chatting to wellREDman InsideUsAll have decided to get involved in AVIT wherever we're welcome. Red suggested we post a list of what equipment we could bring up, so here's our list to show what we usually take out on the road, so whoever's sorting this out can take their pick as to what they want to use.
I think I met Steve from newcastle a while ago, although my memory does have hiccups, did you not pop into my house in reading steve & buy a projector? - if it is you nice one, looks like we'll meet again afterall.
OK equipment list
2 x InFocus LP530 projectors
1 x Videonics MX1 vidmixer
2 x rackmount 2ghz PC's running Resolume & Arkaos
3 x 15" TFT's
1 x sony VCR deck
1 x sony DVD deck
1 x 4 way 100 meter distibution amp
3 x 10m s-video leads
3 x cotton sheet screens
Although I'm only just putting our name down, we're keen to do whatever we can to help. Any other equipment or expertise necessary give me a shout.
