What's an approximate conversion between ansi lumens and 'standard' lumens?

Hahahaha... you wish..... ANSI is SUPPOSED to be standard but in the projector market wars its a seriously marketable quality to be able to out do the "lumen" numbers on other projectors... hence it has been changed by companies that do it there own way....
also leading to why I have seen 600 lumen sonys that look brighter than a 1000 lumen NECs.

Hahahaha
yes see "watts" on speakers / amplifiers
basicaly its compleatly meaningless the only way to tell is by a direct comparison - somthing that any decent sales office will be happy to do for you.
lumens arn't the be all and end all though - you'll be much happyer with a good zoom + high contrast ratio than a couple of hundred extra lumens

I have a 4000 lumens projector. I also have a 1300 ansi lumens projector. Obviously my 4K one isn't 3 times brighter.

*Bump*
I still wanna know. I've seen projectors listed as 7500 lumens, but I don't think I've ever seen ansi lumens over 4000.
Conversion between anyone? If no one has any idea what I'm talking about still, it seems like back in the early nineties 'lumens' were the measurement as opposed to 'ansi lumens', which I assume at the moment may be around 1 ansi lumen = 2.2 lumens?

I'm sorry to say this *****, but most of your posts are like mini articles. I think that you should have your own daily column on VJC cos you are spot on with it all.:)
However, coming from a photography background, this time I see you have just added another low fi NON standard in maglights and a totally climactic/universal NON standard.
Standards in optical/electronics are based on quality control in manufacturing. Hence, with lenses; a Leica lens will always be made to a specific standard and are known as the best lenses in the world. A Pentax lens is produced in much the same way but with less quality control; you could effectively purchase a lens as good as a leica but there are 99% worse aswell.
The same goes for beamers although the variables are much greater especially with LCD panels.
The BEST standard to use is a camera light meter, ie, a video camera and output a still image at 17% grey. Standardise on your gain and aperture. The BBC TV test card was actually the best calibration image ever made. All the various lines, contrasts and colour variables including a flesh tone.
So if a VJ standard is going to happen be aware of what the professionals work from and make a better one.
What is the quality control in maglights (Euro/US/China)?
What type of smog within each climactic atmosphere does your city output?
What shelf life have your duracells, had what bunny does it team with.
No seriously, your right to suggest a VJ standard, also if ppl got back to traders and manufacturers with these comments, would they take note? Probably not; confuse the enemy eh.
Tom is on a better tip with functionality, but I would say try to clean the lenses now and then; soap and water only (no cleaners) and use a micro-pore lens cloth.....you would be surprised at the difference. Oh and project on a standard refklectance, but thats another article....
Anyway, keep up the mini articles, you are a guru at heart.

ansi lumens is a 9 point level of measurement taken from the 4 corners of a projected screen , 4 points between them along the edges , and the center to make an average lumen count of the overall image at a given distance . if a projector is rated in lumens only that is a measurement of light taken only from the center , as it has something to do with the way the lens distorts the light , much in the same way a flash light lens does(or torch lens for you brits) , but that's the difference . it's a good tip to help you chizzel down the price from seller buy asking them if it one or the other as i'll bet they'll not no , which leaves you position to negotiate , provided you've done you home work ahead of time .
