So do you lot actually have musical/political opinion or do you see your art as being completely disjointed from music

As I would say some one VJing to Technoe would have an entirely different job to someone VJing "intelligent" ( as it was once refered to ) drum and bass....

I am a DJ and a producer that would love a VJ, but if my form of music was to be represented visually it would need someone with some background in the genre...

So...My point is you could all be amazing and think you are the mutts nutts but to a DJ or the man that made the tune you may have not a clue...

I love visuals but if someone who was used to doing techno in Plymouth came to my night he would not feel it like the crowd which know the scene from which I am from...

Thus, what do you feel...Clever visuals, and you have an opportunity to play some dance music nights...Or do you have artistic and musical principles which you stick to...If you just like visuals then fuck off and make some art...If you like music then is that more important than the hardware/software...

howdy to the janner neighbour.

I dont think the points you raise are so black and white

I think if your that keen to have your music visually represented in a particular way you need to develop that with the visual artist, just having someone whose into your scene doesnt mean you both agree.

perhaps someone from outside your scene could bring a whole new light and energy to it.

i come as an entity in my own right not just a slave to a dj/producer - and in this light i would expect to collaborate with a dj/producer to achieve a desired effect. Most vj`s i`m sure could adapt and develop new suitable styles to meet demand while still keeping aligned to thier own artistsic preferences.

But does my wanting to be an entity in my own right mean i dont appreciate, perform with symapthy to the dj or work in reaction to the music? I dont think so.

How about a dj working with sympathy and in reaction to the visuals aswell?

Feeling the crowd is a whole other talent. You dont have to be well into a scene to be able to appreciate it, or mix well to it.

Hardware/software is just a tool, so no its not important atall.
It allows us to achieve what we do.

the process and output is whats significant/important.

well, i see my vj'ing as "art in progress" ... performing art ... art accompanying the music, and not the other way around

and the musical genre, of course, will influence my performance

I wont do the same type of show to a detroit set, as I would to let's say a jungle set.
And the theme/decorations of the club/event will also influence

I have a background as a DJ and a sound technician, and I KNOW music... dance, techno, d&b, ebm, rock, whatever ... even if it is a brand new track I've never heard before... Predicting breakdowns in the tunes, or "takeoffs"/"buildups" is part of a VJ/VA's job, and if u cant do that u could just leave ur computer running random presets at random intervals.. or in other words; perhaps being a VJ just isnt your line of career ?

I HATE going to a club or event and seeing the sound techie or the VJ not doing his show to the music, and just standing there doing random presets whenever feeling like it, and not LISTENING to the music, nor trying to predict changes in the music

not sure if this answered your question tho.... :)
