heres some thoughts on avit 2003 and the state of the scene as i see it. please don't take these comments too negatively, its all fairly idealistic and doesnt take into account the hard physical realities involved in putting something like this together, so please take it on that level. i've lots of good memories from the event of people, clips, nodes and the pleasure in being part of something - and there were some great individual visuals that have put more colours on my pallette, but..

from what i gather, the reason this year wasnt a success financially, and was a bit of a letdown for me, was the massjam. to break even, the attention of the locals needed to be captured. now this shouldnt be too hard for us to do, seeing as peoples attention is what we deal with, and some of the people here live in brighton. well, the brighton clubber knows the brighton centre, they know it would take something extreme to transform the stale Office vibe of the venue, and from the advertising they simply didnt feel that was gonna happen. and they were right - at times the main room felt like a corporate powerpoint presentation, given by the dj, who was still the centre of peoples attention, and here lies the problem. dance music evolved us from the tired old rock format of the star on stage and the seperate observer in the crowd but the scene has regressed, superstar djs are the new rock stars, new sounds come and go (i'm a breaks fiend) and we're all still waiting for the thing to leap forward. well the responsibility lies with us, and what we have to do is not restrict our creativity to 640x480 but to consider the whole environment, to work with the building and get rid of ceilings, floors, walls, djs, and replace with the contents of our minds - only then will the club experience evolve - its waiting for us. the massjam should have been an event that showed what's possible, and showed others why it matters, and it wasn't that event. the friend i was staying with couldnt see why i'm so passionate about this, she said she 'doesnt wanna watch telly when she's out' and she's right of course so i took her to the massjam and we watched telly in an room not unlike the one i sign on in - now if a clip had shown someone signing on.. context is everything. i wouldnt place that much weight on it but it was built up to be the focal point of the festival, and i went there expecting a dizzying retinal scorch, which didn't happen, altho the AV area downstairs was more focussed and seemed to work better. my friend told me the only time visuals have added something magical to a night for her was at a free party nearby when they were beamed onto the white cliffs. this is what people respond to, visuals meaning more than the content shown on a square screen, cos theres only really us interested in that. we need to take responsibility for everything someone sees at a party, cos like i say, everyones waiting for us to sort it out.

with respect

made a simple LITTLE room come ALIVE with just 2 projectors.

I would LOVE to see these guys at AVIT SF... just two of their projectors could make a party unlike anything most have ever seen before...

ESPECIALLY if we can get a jam session going on those things.... multiple styles so make sure every square inch of the place is covered :)

was it ELumenatii or somesuch thing? (great name btw) :)

Maybe MassJam shouldn't be the climax...? Maybe it should be the initial meet and greet. Kinda like hangin' out a shingle and saying "hello" to all the other VJs.

Maybe for the climax, you take submissions for a few conceptual installations (2 or 3). Groups can submit a design and the one(s) selected sets up the final event (which features a performance and a dancefloor, possibly awards, etc).

the massjam wasnt the climax, thats why it was on friday night

the massjam is the only way of accomodating a large proportion the hundreds of vjs that want to play at avit

the massjam was a success
the only failure was in getting in enuff ppl to fill the place, and that was down to promotional and pr issues

I personaly really dug seeing screens all round the room with different content on each
and a big island of rigs in the mddle.

it also should be pointed out that the space was chosen for the needs of the day programme & due to little alternatives had to be used for the massjam (although far from ideal). And although for the day stuff we still had to make compromises to create as many rooms as we needed, it was cool to have nearly everything under one roof.

As for the massjam, i thought the tech crew did an amazing job transforming the space in about half of the time that was really needed. :yep:

But of course everything can be improved and there has been lots of great ideas flying around since the event. If we can take onboard the best of what ppl say here and learn from our experience...i promise you next year will blow your mind...& hopefully take the scene forward...

holly i like the idea of submissions for installations, and to transform a whole venue that way. and if we made a big effort to keep the whole process of realizing the concept as transparent as possible (online), we'd all learn how to do it right, and obviously we'd all pile in with our suggestions for tweaking the thing, cutting costs etc - maybe some of the grief involved in setting something like this up can be avoided this way. the strongest thing going for avit is that its based around this community, and that can be pushed. i think avit needs a single central event that gets peoples attention outside of the community, and if, like u say red, massjam wasnt meant to be it, then i think theres no reason next time why it shouldnt be.

Something we realised this year was that while AVIT needs a space where many VJs can play and also needs a showcase for non VJs, mixing these two together isn't neccessarily the best idea.

The technicalities of allowing so many poeoiple to perform together means that less mindspace is available for the overall look of the thing.

My view is that future events should provide separate spaces for mass VJ jam sessions and for a proper showcase for people outisde of the VJ scene. The showcase may involve some jamming, but it shoudl be thought throug hasa showcase rather than starting with the assumption that it will take any particular form.

what youre saying about having a seperate showcase makes sense, the massjam must be a tech nightmare (mad respect to those that pulled it off). if we agree avit needs an impossible object at its core that reaches outside the community, then how is it to be done? holly's idea for submissions still appeals to me, but is it realistic to expect that there are enough avit-core (who presumably live near the location) to provide different solutions? maybe, i dunno. maybe unusual venues should be looked at, not clubs or conference centres or bars but somewhere currently unused - warehouses, old churches etc, if we could get hold of a place for a month before the event, then something serious could be done, and a dedicated team could really get stuck in, maybe collaborating with other fields like set designers, lighting folk, sound systems (the soundsystem at the massjam was fucking beautiful). it seems to me that if the whole process was to be made into an online project and filmed, if enough time was set aside for it to happen, and every little cost and decision, every move was to be recorded, then it looks more appealing to any organisation willing to stump up cash to fund it. then we show it on tv, creating a buzz, and making an object out of the whole creative/realisation process. everyone then sees that radically transforming their environment is possible, and they go away and do it themselves. boom - heaven on earth.

Great Ideas from everyone,

Cerasus, unusual venues like unused - warehouses, old churches sound appealing, the conference centre ceilings where sooo low and it was architecturally boring.

Making shows more modular and staggered, with separate groups responsible for each one, instead of the mass jam scenario could make things a whole lot more manageable, don't put your eggs all in one basket.

If possible maybe think of changing the date of festival for a warmer time of year this will lend itself to a full on outdoor rave, hire tents, join forces with one of the regional music festivals.

Brighton is quite an arty town, hosting a very large art festival every spring; I see this as a good time to do our stuff.

Just throwing a few more into the pot?

the time of year is optimal for funding applications,

also its loads cheaper for accomodation for ppl travelling to avit
can you imagine how much those flats would have cost in peak season prices?

we did investigate doing it during Brighton festival but the consensus of advice we got was that there is so much going on then that wed have been competing for audiences with loads of other pukka stuff

Also its somewhere elses turn to have avit, next year

I do think it would be cool if all us brightonites could get something together for the festival tho, Jonfish has suggested doing a visual equivalent of B.A.S.S which i think is a good idea so maybe we can get that together
