first live gigs + max?

hi all,
I'm just getting started as a performance vj, with my first shows lined up for Sept. I've been plaing around with VDMX on my powerbook G4 but I haven't gotten anything really useable. In particular I want to create effects which are modulated by analysis of the live sound. I want to control what aspects of the live sound is analysed into what effects.

Anything else I need? I'd really appreciate some of your valueable experience.

a really cheap kombination would be a pc using pd/gem
instead of max/nato for analysis and conversion to midisignals (maybe some visualsations,too) and a mac with imag-ine fed with the midioutput of pd, both routed thru a videomixer... voila..... :)
but then again... lotsastuff....

on the other hand... is it just me or is max/nato really the only
visual package on mac capable of analysing and utilizing audio?
