at last i'm approaching getting a notebook. i'm probably lookin at a dell 8200. but i'm slightly confuzed over the new p4's, are they actually slower for some stuff than p3's? and is this just cos programs arent using the new p4 instruction set? is this relevant? should i just go for the p4?

I'm writing this, from class, on my 2-day old 8200. I love it. The slowest p4 you can get in a dell is 1.6Ghz, which is enough of a difference between the fastest p3 that it's faster, even when it's relatively slower. The 8200 is actually upgradeable too, so if you feel like going to 2.0 or 2.2 or 2.4 or whatever's on the market then, you can order a new cpu from dell parts.

I have a toshiba sattelite 5005-s504, PIII 1.1 gig, 30 gig HD, 512meg ram, harmon/kardon speakers, Geforce II, 15 inch TFT. I love it! I tore it apart one day cuz I was bored, and I noticed that it had a standard Intel PGA desktop socket, jumpers on the board for overclocking, it was wierd, so now what im gonna do is nab a P4 1.7, and de-solder the vid chipset and upgrade that to a geForce 4 pro, only concern is that there would be alot of heat, but oh well, more fans = more noise + vid card RAM upgrade, eh, Ill figure out somthin. anyway, just some input on Lappie's of mine. One thing I have noticed with toshiba is they like to put desktop items in they're lappies, to save $$ + u get more power, but the thing is, u dont have much battery, unless you do software "underclocking". but still, if your looking for portable power, and dont mind that short battery, go with the TOP Toshiba "S" series, u get more for your $$ that way, plus, they are nice and stable also, but dont get anything less than the s504, cuz it will suck for you. so pretty much every laptop is upgradable like a desktop....TO A LIMIT..... Personaly, I would go for AMD, but most laptops have intel's in them, so get the P4, if you are going to be using newer software, but get the P3, if you are going to be using older, either way, there will allways be some types of conflicts with hardware/software stuff, so...good luck and later

I got the 8200 cuz we're actually working! =] I saved up some money, sold some shit, and borrowed the rest... I needed it badly. We finally have two decent laptops... I can't wait to use them in a gig. =]

hey murph.... what's the speed of the harddrive on the 8200? in MBytes/s would be nice... i'm just wundering how many video streams the drive will play simultaneously without frame dropout.

that's a good question, not sure on throughput, but I've run resolume in chaos mode at fullscreen without any noticeable slowdown... 320x240 midivid clips. trying to think of some test that would benchmark that for ya... I know it's slightly slower than my 7200rpm 18GB Western Digital in my desktop, I can feel it in game loads sometimes, but I've not yet felt like "damn, I'm gonna need to buy a firewire drive" like we had to for mark's laptop. I'll see what I can come up with on real numbers here...
here's the drive: http://www.toshiba.com/taissdd/products/features/MK4019gax-Over.shtml

100mb/s that is fukin fast, but probably not sustained... check this app i got with matrox years ago - tells you sustained data transfer rates of drives on you machine, really helps for knowing when to defrag.
i think i'm gonna try an get the new 60g 5400rpm in the 8200.

Murph,
maybe you can help me...
I also just bough a 8200, but since I use vJo,
I need to use a mirroring setup when on dual monitor
up to now I havent been able to
set it up differently then extending my desktop,
meaning my two monitors are virtually
side by side, instead of one on top of the other,
if you know what I mean...
any help is appreciated,
Vj Ne1

I DL'd that disk test thing, but I don't know whether to trust it, running it multiple times gives me all kinds of results, ranging from 8MB/s to 16MB/s. Hope that helps... ?

heres a better hd benchmarking util - use big files to test the sustained transfer rate
