I'm looking to upgrade a portable pc with standard atx size case - can someone tell me if a "micro atx" motherbord will fit in a normal atx case?

I've done it in the past, and have had no problem. I found this site first though http://www.pcguide.com/ref/case/formATX-c.html
Ultimately I reckon its best to check w/ the case manufacter first.
Hope this helps.

There is a very very high chance it will be fine :)
The only thing that could go wrong that I could think of, would be if your case manufacturer had been lazy and not put all the mainboard mounting post screw threads on the backplate to support the official microAtx standard. And even if you didnt have supports to line up with every screw hole in the mainboard, it wouldnt matter usually as long as you are careful not to bend the mainboard, and even then they are fairly resilient.
But, I have never seen the above holes missing, so you should be fine. I cant remember the url right now but there is a site with diagrams of official microATX spec, so you could easily check before.
Everything else is the same as ATX really, the backplate is the same unless its got onboard sound & netcard and your current mainboard hasnt. Chances are the backplate would have punchoutable cutouts for any extra back connectors anyway.
Power supply has the same connector, the only PSU problem you could have is if your current setup is an older generation chip and you are getting a slightly psu-fussy amd chip or p4 etc.
