Does anyone play Unreal Tournament - either ut2003 or the prior version?

I shall explain why once I have established who (if anyone) plays it.

...just playing Quake2 from time to time. there is no and there never will be a better 1st person shooter :D

edit: i see ... you posted this into developers area, so i can imagine what you think ... *hehe*

i played UT like two years ago, and i want to say that (when you have good co-players) it's more fun than Quake (im a big quake lover too) but it can be more tactical, and so more fun to play ;)

I've played my fair share of UT .... varioues versions..

the idea of using a UT2003 style engine to power a realtime gfx environment is a nice idea... i think even the Q3 engine is open source now, tho it's still a bit behind UT2003 in gfx capabilities..

i take it you are refering to ESC?

me? ESC never heard of it, enlighten us?

quake is imho a bit less kiddy than UT.
UT is very many-colouful and the the voice-samples ("next!", "rest in pieces"...) I find very cheesy...

In quake you have 2 opportunities:

-to be good with the railgun
-to get fragged

IDsoft rulez!

if u compare those games with music i would say:
UT = Pop
Quake = Jazz

:P

Yeah. I'm a big fan of ut2k3. Especially all the levels people have made. I'd estimate there are about 5,000 different worlds for ut2k3.

A nice idea, but limited by the need to have a copy of UT.

Quite an old project now, and i have a better solution for a similar idea.

Esc (pronounced "escape") is a 3D first and third person perspective online nightclub for the PC. A new way for people to socialize online, it combines music, dance, chat, scripted and live performances, and detailed customization.
Chat while listening to the DJ spin, then watch the band perform. Head to the dance floor and bust out your moves, which gets you better clothes, tickets to the back room or magic pills. Some pills give you new abilities, others change your appearence, still others change the way the world looks. Create your own dance moves, or entire scripted performances complete with special effects. Or just take a few good friends to a secluded booth or overlook and talk the night away.

In Esc people will be able to:

Choose their name and body, and find different clothes and looks once online.
Perform open ended dance moves by pushing buttons in rhythm with the music. Think Dance Dance Revolution meets Tony Hawk.
Chat using text and simple animated expressions (e.g. wave.)
Take pills that give new abilities, change their appearance, change the way the world looks, etc.
Create their own dance moves or entire performances, complete with special effects. This could become a new medium and venue for machinima (movies made with 3D games.)
Start their own club with music from their own CDs or MP3s.
Leave messages with the bartender for other people, or teach the bartender responses to common questions or phrases, similar to infobots on IRC.
Esc is a total conversion for Unreal Tournament. We replace almost every aspect of the game with our own, so that each multiplayer server running UT/Esc becomes it's own nightclub. You will need a copy of Unreal Tournament to join.

This sounds strangely like the Star Wars Galaxies cantina stuff, dancer is a player type.

I don't think the "virtual club" concept will work, unless it is a sub-system of a larger world(i.e. a place for adventurers to rest. . ) The problem is that in any virtual world there must be objectives and challenges.

Also, the social aspect isn't there. "Meeting" someone on a "pill" in a "virtual club" doesn't come even close to simulating the emotions of a club.

I'd say drop the "simulated-club" idea, and go for something less like this world. Perhaps a cooperative 3d modeler, or cheap pda/wireless access to the visuals for people at the party. Or make a "party world", where the club is just a place where people relax after adventures(like finding waldo, or fighting the black ickies)

oh it works ok, espec when you map real-time video from an event onto virtual screens. We are beta testing for our radio station site and it is working very well.

Well, my point wasn't that the software wouldn't function, it was that it would never pick up steam.

As a programmer(and a skeptic), I have a very hard time believing the project is mature and widely used.

So, in the interests of proving non-vaporware, can you provide any links ?

Ill provide links when its finished, as it is a commercial project.

Well sofar I hear that;
fuussmuuss, PiedPiper, katascope & paradoxewan play UT (UT or UT2k), or are into it. I am not going to get into a Qauke/UT debate, both are very cool engines and game types. Each to there own I always say.

FIRST -> paradoxewan:
I wasnt refering to Esc, although thats a cool bit of software, I have it running. If you get an Esc server up let me know so I can finally use it on the net, and have a virtual beer with you at the Titty Twister :P :) Also, how is it that you are mapping video in realtime into the UT engine - or are you just importing the frames via UTEditor as animations? I would be keen to hear how dude.

SECOND:
OK. The reason I ask if there are any ut users who are vj's is because I have designed a map which is currently being hosted on the Internode game server in Australia. The map is called iSOtope144, and the version being served is purely an InstaGib specifically designed map - No normal weapons.

THIRD:
Though, I have continued developing the map into a fully mind f#ckable VJ version that I have been using to perform with over the last year or so.

FINALLY:
If I hear any further expressions of interest then I will proceed with top secret agenda ptII.

I will be putting an example of what is possible (in iSOtope) with the enigine soon-ish for those interested.

The map can also be download from;

Hi mate, i spent a year or so messing about with esc. I really like the way the audio is sent through it.

Video screens inside is pretty tricky, although im lead to think it is possible by the devlopers

The project has just been started up again, and im interested to see what they do with the unreal 2003 engine.

For my uses, it was not good looking enough, so i have since moved onto another engine, which makes video maps really easy, and works really well, and looks amazing.

Drop me an email, or better still get me on msn, and i'll take you though our recent devlopements.

What we are looking at (without giving too much away) is live dmx integration for lighting, with martin show designer for designing "real-life" rigs and easy venue design in 3ds max. Coupled with live audio and video in a virtual enviroment.

speak with you soon

just to toss in my two cents here - the trailers for the new Half-Life two engine look awesome - lots of processing power needed, but the environments are incredibly reactive (ie wood breaks like wood versus metal bends like metal)

Anyway - there's one part in the demo where someone picks up a camera or something - and you can see that what the camera is seeing (in-game) is being mapped and distorted onto the walls in real time.

That's all :)

All about Quake 3 over here.. great way to work out anxiety when code doesn't do what you want.

Looking forward to Doom 3. Going to have to upgrade my video card.

Yeah I'm into UT as well and I have 2003 also. On the PC I was way into Battlefield 1942 for a while (massively multiplayer WW2 shooter)

I'll try to check out yr map next time I play - which isn't too often these days as live video has replaced video gaming as my hobby of choice. But I still do it on occasion.
