so, have any of you photonic tinkerers ever taken your show to the grandest desert fest this side of the pecos river?
i went to bm in 2000 and i must say it is the MOST incredible display of eclectic art i have ever witnessed in one venue. it is the kind of experience where you can get what you seek. if you want to get drunk and be a buffoon, there is that. if you want to take illicit errmmm substances and walk on the far planes, there is that. if you want to simply wander around and soak the variable stimuli, there is that.
but i digress. i recall seeing and hearing plenty of sound system setups composed of bands, djs, or simple PA cd systems. this event would be fertile ground for the vj.
so have any of you ever put on a show there? or plan to this year?

Ive seen footage on the TV in the past. Do people take special precautions with their equipment to protect them when there are sandstorms? The storm I saw on the telly looked quite bad, a projector full of sand would make me cry!
Does seem like a really special event there, pretty unique!

w00h00!
our camp just had an organizational meeting tonight and it looks like a friend and i are going to set up some sort of projection screen system out on the playa!
he took his xl1 out last year without using seals, bags, etc and said it came back in good shape. he had to do a thorough brush/air cleaning upon returning, but no permanent damage was done. so, i am thinking set up the computer and projector inside an RV and shine through a window to your screen and your sand exposure would be minimized.
well, that's the initial plan, heh.
if any of you are in the neighborhood, be sure to come on over and take a turn at the helm. our camp is named home slice and you all are more than welcome to drop by.

I'm going to go and try and be portable.
I have an RV to hide my gear in during the dusty daytime, and then I'm going to try and go really sparse and just use laptop/midi-controller/DV camera and Projector. This should allow me to do shows at some different places. I'll also be projecting Whale footage on a friends project called ZeArc on Wednesday night/Thursday AM.
My goal is to do short sets every once in a while, instead of trying to provide a whole evening of entertainment.
Anybody have advice on battery packs?
My laptop, camera, and midi controller can all run on batteries, so I was thinking of getting a professional battery belt and being totally self-powered.

D7 has been going out there for a number of years for the primary purpose of during massive projections.
check out some of the pics I posted on the eyecandy photo section. Our largest show was a 6 screen setup in 99.
Warning, create dust free enviornments for your gear with thick ziplock bags carburator air filters and computer fans.
Even protected your gear will never be the same.
The dust is so incrediablely fine you will find it on your gear a year from now.
We generally big a couple of RV's and project from the windows but it still isn't enough to stop the dust from invading your stuff.
It generally cost me a few hundred dollars to get the projectors cleaned and about $1000 to clean the lasers.

hey frenzy,
what camp are you in? i wanted to attend phoenix fest in the NW a few months ago but life was not so willing. it seems we will both be at burningman and if you are going to thrown down a set or three, i would love to check it out.
i leave tomorrow night to help setup the community and our camp so may miss your reply. if you catch this in time, drop by camp homeslice and say hello. make sure and leave contact info if i happen to miss you. the playa is a weird and wonderful thing. can't wait to be in it.
our camps plans for a projector have fallen to not; however, i have built a large torii (recall those large wooden japanese spiritual gateways often standing near shinto shrines) in which a 7 ft by 7 ft screen can be attached. basically, the projection would occupy the entire gateway area.
it would be a breathtaking frame for a photon fiesta.
i will also try to find out where you are camping out D7. i would also like to see your direction out there. you too are surely invited to camp homeslice to say hello, enjoy the shade/art/consumeables.
see you out there :)

I'll be at Arson Island... possibly doing some projection there, and then out on the playa in the morning until dawn on Thursday (thurs am) doing some projections on a project for photographing and just general neatness.
I'll have a projector, so my real problem is going to be coming up with something to project on most of the time. Again, I'm travellin' light, so I'm not really bringing a screen.
Arson Island is at 90degrees and Esplanade... but it is pretty big.
Just ask for Leo, that guy that does video...
Should get you a lead somewhere.
Anyone else know directions to their camp at this point?

i am the video manager of a big camp at burning man- disorient. we have been pretty ambitious about video for the past few years and will be even more so this year, as i believe we will be in one of the corner esplanade slots. 36' geodesic dome, with 3 projectors evenly spaced around the structure. we avoid the dust by keeping everything inside of RVs, sealed from the elements. this year we will be broadcasting on channel 8 out there, and attempting to keep content going 24/7 for the entire festival. bring your television and rabbit ear pairs! anyone who is seriously interested in aiding this venture, please send me a PM.

hey saccade! sounds cool, can't wait to see it!
i'd say i'd help out in some way but i'm flying out, and am still a bit hesitant about bringing any of my equipment out there. when i make my next million to replace all the dusted up equipment i'll help ya out :) ;) :)

I'll probably be working on a stage...
I have some ideas about butchering my old car into a projection station.
Not sure exactly at this point.
